*District 5170 Project: President Heather shared the the District project of funding wheelchairs to Mexico and Syria. Our club will meet District Gov goal of 1 wheelchair from President discretionary funds for $500. President Heather challenges members in memory of Frank Davila to consider contributing to this cause. Checks payable to: "Rotary Club of Mountain View LEF". Scott introduced our Guest Speaker Phillip Lan - President, Bay Valley Tech to share “Addressing the Severe Shortage of Skilled Tech Workers in the Bay Area”. Phillip oversees the organization's fast-growing free code academy and tech hub, which supports entrepreneurs with inexpensive office space, digital marketing services and software talent. Phillip shared the organization’s success and seeks partners to continue to meet the need to diversify software programmers in California and nationwide. The program’s goal is to fund 1000 students per year with an economic impact of $21 billion over 30 years.
Key attributes of the Code Academy program are it is free of charge to students with a request they volunteer once they are working. Currently, the program is successful virtually with a record number of applicants. Soon Bay Valley Tech will have a center located in Sunnyvale.
