Meeting Notes by Bruce
February 2nd, 2016
President Twana opened the meeting with a welcome to all and a reminder that, “We’re More Than A Club…We’re a Family!!!” On this year’s Groundhog Day, our International call to action for is to “Be a Gift to the World.” Our club’s call to action is “Fun Through Service,” and this year’s club focus is “Being the Best We Can Be.”
Bert Raphael led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Bruce Barsi shared some profound thoughts about Football in anticipation of Sunday’s Super Bowl.
Songmaster Phil Armi conducted our Rotary symphony with “My Country Tis of Thee.”
President Elect Jerylann Mateo introduced the following guests of Rotary:

Dr. Mike Fischetti, a Board Member with Hope’s Corner
Helen Meeks, a community member and prospective club member
Monique Kane rewarded Dave Cole with a most tasty treat for his donation to the Rotary Foundation during her Foundation Cupcake Minute.
General Club Announcements:
- Thanks to Dennis Kobza for providing dessert today.
- Ski Trip is coming up March 17th to 20th. Contact Bruce Barsi if you would like to attend.
- Alan Goodman is taking donations for Alternative to a Crab Feed fundraiser. Please make checks payable to Mountain View Rotary Charities.
- The Speech Contest next week on February 9th. Sanjay Dave and Judy Hannemann are coordinating.
- The next Board Meeting is on Thursday, February 18, starting at 5:00 pm at CHAC.
- Our next Evening Social is on Tuesday, February 23rd starting at 6:00 pm at Paul and Susan Reinhart’s house, 278 Stierlin Road in Mountain View. The theme will be Mardi Gras so feel free to bring those beads and masks! The cost is $15 per person unless February is your birthday month in which case it is free. A signup list will be circulated at the next couple of meetings for this event.
- Volunteers are being sought to help with the LPGA Women’s Open event which is being played at the CordeValle Golf Resort in Morgan Hill from July 4th to 10th. Contact President Twana if you would like further information about this opportunity.
- Helen Meeks has submitted her application to join the Mountain View Rotary Club. As required by our Club policy, her name and intention to become a member is hereby formally published. Should you wish to provide input in regard to Ms. Meeks’ membership, contact President Twana prior to our next meeting on February 9th.
District Announcements:
- District Cabinet Meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 3rd from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the India Community Center in Milpitas. There will be a Community Service Project Faire from 4:30 to 6pm, where clubs in our district showcase the community projects that they are working on. Clubs are encouraged to take a table and display their projects. If you are interested in attending, please let Twana know.
- Rotary U (District Assembly): Thursday, March 24th at the India Community Center. Our Club pays for your attendance at this event and we encourage new members and officers to attend.
- District Conference: We will have a table for our Club at the District Conference on Saturday night, April 30th. If you are interested in attending, please sign up. Dinner is $75. There will be a talent show and Cliff Dockerman speaking that evening.
Personal Sharing:
- Jim Spangler received Happy Birthday wishes for his birthday on February 1st. He shared that his son Jake will be returning from his deployment in the Middle East next week.
- Kevin Chiapello received Happy Birthday wishes for his birthday next week.
- Judy Hannemann shared her experience of spending last year’s Ground Hog Day in Pennsylvania seeing the real thing.
Speaker:
Scott Johnson introduced today’s speaker, Leslie Carmichael, who is the founder and Chairperson of Hope's Corner. Also speaking was Dr. Mike Fischetti, who is on the Board of Hope’s Corner.
Planning for Hope’s Corner began in 2010 with the first breakfast being served in September, 2011. The program averaged 28 breakfasts served when it started and it has grown to an average of 231 breakfasts served in 2015.
In August, 2015, a project was completed to provide accessible restrooms with showers to the program’s clients. This has been extremely well received.
Hope’s Corner is an entirely volunteer program. Community partners include:
Los Altos United Methodist Church, CSA, Second Harvest Food Bank, Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange, Day Worker Center, Neighbors Helping Neighbors, Mayview Health Clinic, and many others. Many community groups also volunteer at Hope’s Corner.
The program recently was granted 501c3 status which makes contributions tax deductible. There is currently a capital campaign to renovate the kitchen at Hope’s
Corner.
Next Meeting:
Tuesday, February 9th. The program will be our Speech Contest. Our 4fer is Roger Kao.
