Mountain View Rotary Club

August 23, 2016                                                                                

President Jerylann greeted the club. Sanjay led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Hal shared a few thoughts to remind the members to enjoy life!  Phil led the club with God Bless America.  

The club welcomed Aswini Kar, Rotarian from India and Greg Coladonato, guest of Sanjay. 

General Club and District Announcements were shared:  

  • Monique seeks more volunteers to assisting with parking fee collectors on behalf of CHAC at Mt. View  Art & Wine.
  • Dave announced September 14 at 5:30pm is training for those who desire to usher at Community School of Music and Arts events.    
  • Sanjay seeks delivery assistance on Saturdays from 6:30am to 7:30am for Hopes Corner.
  • Tori shared next week Tuesdays meeting, August 30th is our social from 5:30 to 7:00pm at Ristorante Don Giovanni.  
  • Next Board meeting is Thursday, September 15 at 5 pm at CHAC.
  • District Governor Partner’s Project…Read Me A Picture is lead for our club by Judy.  Donation request will happen soon and more details forthcoming.
  • Districts upcoming trip to Port Harcourt, Nigeria, West Africa is October 18-26 to participate in a polio immunization exercise. If any of you would like more information on this trip, please let Club President know.
  • District membership training is Saturday, August 27 from 9 am – 12:30pm at Embassy Suites in Milpitas. Sanjay and Jerylann are schedule to attend.
  • Monthly auctions will begin in September to raise additional funds for our club’s Endowment fund to keep scholarship giving strong. Our first auction will be held on September 13th, for 2 tickets to the Celebrity Forum with guest George Takai presenting onr October 13.
    The club seeks additional auction items, let Club President know if you have something to donate.
  • Personal Sharing & Announcements:  Jim S. announced a donation to the endowment in memory of Alan’s mother who passed recently. 

Guest of Rotary: Bert introduced Aswini Kar, Past District Governor and Past President for International Travel and Hosting Fellowship.  Aswini shared some details of his club in India, various projects they support, recruitment ideas for our club and specifics about the fellowship he chairs.  The International Travel and Hosting Fellowship has members who host Rotarians in 62 countries which begins from picking up the guest at the airport, providing housing, tour guide for 2-3 days while they stay, and finale of returning the guest to the airport/departure location.  The rotary website has more information about various fellowships: http://www.ithf.org

This week’s speaker was Chris O’Connor from Silicon Valley Leadership Group, whom was introduced by Fred.  Chris shared with us the the 8 key funding plans for Measure B - Traffic Relief and Road Repair Initiative that will be on the November ballot for Santa Clara County residents.  The half-cent sales tax increase is to raise $6 Billion dollars in Santa Clara county with Mountain View residents to benefit from approximately $1.2 Billion.  The key improvement areas for city residents are:  road maintenance funds, county expressways, highway interchanges, and Caltrain grade separations and safety improvements. The measure must be approved by a 2/3 vote in November to pass.  The measure is currently endorsed by various city Chamber of Commerce groups and city council members.  

Next week meeting on August 30th is a social at 5:30pm at Ristorante Don Giovanni.  

The club meeting on September 6th will present Ayinde Rudolph, Superintendent Mountain View Whisman School District and our 4fer is Fred Storek.
