Meeting Minutes - July 11, 2017

 

 

President Scott Johnson welcomed everyone to the first meeting of the 2017-8 Rotary Year for which the theme is Making a Difference. For Mountain View Club it is Having Fun making a Difference.

 

 

 

 

After the pledge of allegiance, Hal Taylor’s Thought was about the Statue of Liberty and people who lived on Liberty Island, the National Park Rangers and military families.  Tourists could climb to the top of the torch until 1916 when German agents ignited the store of war materials on Black Tom Island nearby and shrapnel hit the statue. The seven spikes on the crown represent the seven seas and continents. The mother of the sculptor, Frederic Bertholdi, was the model for the lady statue.

 

Phil Armi, our song master, followed up with “God Bless America”

 

Visiting Rotarian from Los Gatos Club was Canan Sunok, originally from Istanbul, now working in California on Home Care.

 

Heather introduced her guest, son, Daniel.

 

Announcements:       Hal and Heather had attended the recent RYLA Barbecue where our club sponsored students, two from Mountain View High and two from St. Francis.

 

                        Next Board Meeting is July 20, 5.15pm at Villa Siena, 2^nd floor.

 

No fines this year. $150 to join the Presidents Club, of which $50 goes to our Endowment and $100 to the Club. Alan is the first to join.

 

News of absent members:  

 

Recent Collection for the End Polio campaign raised $600.                        

 

Stressing Membership this year, President Scott urged attendance at the District Seminar on August 19 at Castlewood Country Club.

 

Avenues of Service will be in Santa Clara on October 5.

 

President Scott thanked Hiro, Paul and Bruce for their setting up before the meeting which now is a Club Assembly. He had been impressed by his personal meeting with International President Ian Riseley, and a video of Riseley speaking at the Convention was shown.

Our District Governor. Orrin Mahoney, will visit the Club in September.

 

Club Trainer, Tom Myers, hopes all members will have read the current Rotary magazine to learn more of Rotary History and Values and R.I. President Ian Riseley, whose message included “we can do more together than we can do alone”.

 

The new pin which Scott had handed out represents the diversity of Rotary. Scott urges all members to invite new people to join. He himself has been in five different Clubs and knows the importance of being invited. The new Board is a great team and board members came up to speak.

 

Tori, Club Service, passed around a sign-up sheet for organizing and hosting socials, nine this year, the first on July 25. On August 29, it will be at Villa Siena.

 

Dave Cole, co-chair with Jim Cunningham for Club Service, will circulate a list again for helping at CSMA. Later we will help with CHAC parking, Cops and Gobblers and the annual Stevens Creek Trail clean-up.

 

Jerylann and Judy for Membership are making appointments to meet with representatives from organizations like CSMA, and schools.

 

Sanjay will continue with Youth Service, following up with Heather for RYLA.

 

Alan Goodman continues with Interact and the Crab Feed.

 

Dick Lubman, for Vocational Service, hopes everyone wears their pins and knows the Four-Way Test.

 

Anita announced the Rotating Dinner will be April 28, 2018.

 

Bert, as President Elect, is scheduling speakers, needs help for September and January.

 

International Service still lacks a chair-person.

 

Treasurer: Fred announced that fees will not change.

 

Co-Secretaries, Paul and Bruce will keep supporting the Club.

 

Jim Cochran will continue the Facebook connection and the photographs.

 

Next Meeting; July 18, Amy Andonian CEO of Avenidas in Palo Alto.
