President Bert welcomed us with our theme to “Be the Inspiration” and as a club, “Have Fun.”
Visiting today was Jason Commerford, newly resident in Mountain View.

Foundation: Monique presented Sheila with a Paul Harris pin.
Community Service: Alan and Tori had ushered at CSMA recently and volunteers are wanted for this Sunday Beethoven concert.
Rotary Travel and Service: Trips to Central America and to India for Polio immunizations are being planned. If interested, let Bert know.
Rotaract: Our Club is joining with Palo Alto University and Los Altos Clubs to sponsor a new Rotaract Club in our area. Tori has volunteered to work with the group.
Birthdays: Greetings to Jim Cochran and Sanjay for Birthdays this month.
Program: Scott introduced Dwight Perry, Past District Governor and member from Castro Valley, Chairman of the Polio Plus Committee. Scott had met him years ago when both were raising funds for a new Castro Valley Library.
Dwight Perry spoke of the World Polio Day, October 24, and quoted numbers for the progress in fundraising and immunizations since the campaign started in 1998. He described early efforts in the Philippines where “Polio Plus” began and how Rotary’s early fundraising enabled co-operation with the World Health Organization to spread internationally to areas where immunizations could be given. The Gates Foundation has provided matching grants.
District 5170 has been a major supporter. Our president Bert went to Ghana for their first inoculations. Recently India seems free of polio but three countries continued to have cases, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Unfortunately political conditions have made work in these countries more difficult. This year only 19 cases are reported in Pakistan and Afghanistan and we are close to the goal of elimination. It is important to keep up the effort to achieve a Polio free world.
