April 21st, 2015 - Meeting Notes by Scott
President Alan played “Hail To The Chief” music, rang the bell and welcomed all to the Rotary Club of Mountain View – “We’re More Than A Club …We’re a Family!” He continued: “Today is April 21st, week #43 of a ‘Club Held Hostage’!” He reminded us that Rotary International’s Call to Action is: “Rotary Lights Up Lives;” and, our Club’s Call to Action is “Fun Through Service.”
Paul led the Pledge of Allegiance. Phil led the group in singing: “God Bless America.” Scott, substituted for Twana, and shared her “Thoughts for the Day,” which were Earth Day (4/22/15) thoughts.
Introductions: Scott introduced two visiting Rotarians from Istanbul, Turkey: Nur Albak and Ozcan Albak…along with their daughter Revna Albak who works for Facebook. Both Nur and Ozcan have been Presidents of their Rotary Club. Ozcan is “District Governor Elect” for his district in Turkey. Rotary banners were exchanged.
The following general announcements were made:
- Jim Cochran reported on The Stevens Creek Trail clean-up held this past Saturday. He said that went very well and a picture was posted on Facebook.
- Alan and Judy reported on the Rotary District Conference held in San Jose this past week at the Doubletree in San Jose. There were enough club members attending to fill a table at the Saturday dinner. Steve reported that the Mountain View Rotary Club golf team tied for first in the District Golf Tournament held on Thursday.
- Scott addressed the upcoming Rotating Dinner set for Saturday, April 25th. It will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Cunninghams, where we’ll have appetizers & cocktails. The main course is at 7 p.m., hosted by 5 Rotarians: Tom, Bert, Twana, Paul, and Monique (their homes). At 9 p.m. we’ll gather back together at Bruce’s house for desserts. Expect to pay between $35 and $40 a piece, collected after that night. Addresses and dinner assignments were distributed. Some small changes will be made to these assignments and will be emailed in a few days.
- Letta was welcomed back and she reported on her traveling.
- Jim Spangler told the Club about his trip to New York and seeing the new Broadway show his son is starring in.
- Bruce reminded club members of the Kick Out scheduled for June 26th at Michaels Restaurant.
- Date reminder: Golf Tournament & Party – June 12th.
SPEAKER INTRO & PRESENTATION: Jack introduced Whitney Block, representing the Stanford Allergy Center for Clinical & Laboratory Teams, who gave a presentation on allergies. After the presentation, President Alan announced that “as a token of our appreciation, we will be making a donation in your name to our local RotaCare Clinic.”
President Alan reminded club members that we are “dark” next Tuesday. He then adjourned the meeting.
