MV Rotary Meeting August 18, 2015

President Twana Karney greeted and welcomed members and guests to the Rotary Club of Mountain View where, “We’re More Than A Club…We’re a Family!!!”

She reminded us that our International call to action for 2015-2016 is to “Be a Gift to the World” and our club’s call to action is “Fun Through Service.”  This year’s club focus is “Being the Best We Can Be.

 

I missed who did pledge of allegiance (sorry).

 

Phil Armi lead us in the Song of the Day: Take me out to the ball game, and also shared with the club a fun story about the weekends passed SJ Giants game.

 

Bruce Introduced Randy, a new member from the Los Altos Rotary Club

Judy Introduced Joe, a visiting rotarian from the Los Altos club and speaker for the day, and Kavita, one of the co-speakers for the days meeting.

Alan regaled us with tales of the ball game and Phil’s awesome win, and also wanted to remind the folks that haven’t paid yet to reach out to him directly.

Heather attended the Camp RYLA bbq event where she was the rotarian rep for both our students as well as students from Los Altos. She said the students were awesome, and even started a project that ended in the planting of a new tree at mission springs. They will be reaching out to the board via email with thoughts and feedback.

 

Birthdays and Anniversaries are now set up on the table behind the sign in desk if you want to keep abreast of that information. On that note, if anyone has an extra easel or presentation board that we could mount these announcements on, that would also be very much appreciated.

 

There will be no meeting next week, and instead we will be having the evening social that day, Tuesday Aug 25th.

Next Board Meeting is Thursday Aug 20 5pm at CHAC

 

Tuesday September 1st will be the next meeting with our District Governor Susan Valenta. The board will meet with her before the meeting at 10:30 at the Adobe. We will also be taking more donations for the Wheel Chair Drive.

 

On that note the Wheel Chair Drive has successfully raised enough money to fund 8 chairs! This was in part to a surprise donation by our president Twana. A $100 fully tax deductible donation, will fund a whole chair for a child in need. The district has already filled one container and is trying to fill a second one at this time. Lets help make it happen!

 

Community Service project: CHAC Parking for September 12 and 13th. We still need 45 more volunteers, please speak to Sheila orMonique about signing up.

Rotary Business Networking in Palo Alto - “Rotary Means Business”. This event will be held on Wed Aug 19 at 7am at the Channing House in Palo Alto. There will be a talk on crowd funding and lots of networking opportunities.

 

Membership Workshop Saturday Aug 22 from 9:30 am to 11 in Milpitas. See Twana if you’re interested.

 

Public Image Seminars start on Tuesday Sept 22 at 7pm at the Santa Clara Police Community Rooms (it’s FREE).

 

Interact President Meeting Sat Sept 5 from 10:30am to 4:15pm at the Quinlan Community Center in Cupertino. Alan will be attending a portion of this event, but more are welcome.

 

Interact’s Fall Leadership Conference is Sun Oct 11 from 8:30am to 3:30pm at Independence High school in San Jose.

 

International Service Project Faire: Wed Sept 2nd at the India Community Center - 525 Los Coches St. Milpitas Ca. 4pm - 6:30pm

 

Rotaract Group of Silicon Valley Peninsula was made a legal entity; Yay!

Joe Eyre and Kavita was introduced by Judy Hanneman as our speakers for the day.

 

Joe is a member of the Los Altos Rotary and came to speak to us about the Los Altos Community Foundation. The Foundation served as an incubator for community driven organizations. They were formed in 1991 and “encourage local philanthropy and civic engagement”. The three focuses presented were:

 

The foundation uses a large grant from the Packard foundation to regnant to local organizations. In the Fiscal Year 2014 they were able to grant out $668,000 to community organizations, causes, and students. Through various types of giving:

 

 

The foundation is able to help local organizations such as Soil and and Water (Kavita’s Organization). As an example of what kind of organizations the LACF gets behind, Kavita gave us a good run down of the Soil and Water organization and their mission to build community through community gardens. They have been gaining traction, and even though they will be leaving their current space, there are a few new spaces that are being looked at to create new gardens. The organization invites all members of the community and offers programs to children, to help them learn about where their food comes from, while they learn to build [good] eating habits. Although they are always looking for more funding, they are also seeking help with advocation and spreading the word within the community of Mountain View.
