Greeter & Thought for the Day:  Hiro Kariya – you’ve heard the expression No Pain, No Gain.  In Hawaii they have a slight twist on that: No Rain, No Rainbows
 
Vocation Spotlight:
  • Dick Lubman – what is the objective of Rotary?  Opportunity for service, high ethical standards and Fellowship.
  • Dave Cole – enlightened us on his background.  After picking fruit and delivering newspapers, Dave had 3 jobs: 1) Gas Station, 2) Sears, and 3) Custom upholstery which he still does today after 50 years at Sterling Custom Upholstery in Mountain View.  He has 15 employees and upholsteries about 150 to 200 feet per week.
 
Foundation Minute: Monique Kane.
  • Paul Harris pin presentations to: Jerylann, Anita and Twana.  Jim Cochran received a letter from the Foundation.  Way to go all!
Auction – Dave Cole:
Today we auctioned off a wine rack with 8 bottles of wine to Tom for $150. Thanks Tom!  Please let us know if you have anything you would like to donate as an Auction Item. 
 
 
According to Jim Spangler, the Endowment Fund has grown from $110,000 last year to $137,000 this year.  !   Let’s keep growing the Endowment! 
 
SPEAKER INTRO: Sanjay Dave introduced our speaker today, Michael Fitzgerald from El Camino Hospital who spoke about Mental Health and Addiction Services.  Addiction and mental health issues tend to be stigmatized in our society as well as under treated.  California has been a leader in patient care for these individuals but costs have gone up dramatically.  For example Impatient Care cost $75 in 1973.  Adjusted for inflation, that would be $395 today, but in fact, that service cost $1250 in 2013.  With the reduction in beds for patients, prisons and homelessness are where these people end up today.    Looking ahead, he says we need to: Reduce mentally ill people that are in prisons, homeless, committing crimes, reduce overall costs and improve patient outcomes.

  • District Governor Partner’s Project…Read Me A Picture – Judy Hannemann, has been mailed for $500.
  • All – Holiday Party was Saturday and was great!!
  • Alan – Crab Feed, January 28th
  • Bruce Barsi – Ski Trip Feb. 23 to 27
  • Personal Sharing & Announcements – Ken wanted to know how much he lost on the Cal/Stanford Big Game.  Estimates were from $2 to $2000!
Other Club Announcements:
  • Board Meeting this week, Thursday 12/15, 5 pm at CHAC
District Announcements:
  • District Conference scheduled for May 6-7 in Santa Cruz. If you would like information on hotels, please let me know.
  • Speech Contest is in February (Judy & Sanjay). The Area 9 contest will be hosted by the Los Altos Sunset Rotary Club on March 14.
  • There is a new Passport Club. Meets the first Saturday of each month in Milpitas. They want to assist other clubs with their projects and are ready to volunteer.
  • The RI International President’s Dinner is January 3 at 6 pm and SJ DoubleTree, cost is $85.
 
President’s Club: We will not be doing fines again this year and I would like to encourage our membership to join the Presidents Club…we have had great participation so far, 21 members, please join them.
