Meeting was called to order by President Sanjay at 12:05.
 
Greeter & Thought for the Day: Tom Myers, who noted today’s speaker topic, artificial intelligence, brings both excitement and apprehension.  And that the only constant in the world is change.
 
Vice President Tori had no visitors to introduce.  Along with being in the smaller room made it feel like a very casual lunch with friends.
 
General Club Announcements:
  • ELC –We’re sponsoring 2 local high school students for the Entrepreneur Leadership Camp.  4 people from MVHS applied and the ELC committee will make a decision by the end of this week.  This is an in-residence event at Pacific Grove and will happen March 29 to March 31, 2 nights.  They are looking for volunteers
    • RTA – These are adults who will help a student group on their project
    • Presenters/Trainers – Entrepreneur Leadership, Human Resources
  • Scholarships – Every year we give scholarships to graduating high school students at MVHS and St. Francis.  We’re a part of the MVLA community roundtable which consists of Our Club, Rotary Club of Los Altos, MVLA Scholars and the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation.  Tori/Susan are representing our club.
  • Speech Contest coming up next Month.  Scott is coordinating the event, which will be the third week of March 21.
  • Service Announcements – Cathy offered several opportunities for service including Hope’s Corner and Kids Against Hunger.  Contact Cathy for more information on both projects.  For Hope’s Corner, our Club is signed up to volunteer on Saturday, March 18th from 8:45 to 11:15 am.  If you would like to volunteer, please sign up on the Hope’s Corner website (www.hopes-corner.org) due to the agency’s liability requirements.  Club Members can use rotary as the password.  We have eight slots to fill.
 
District Announcements:
  • Far West President-Elect Training Seminar, March 3-5 at the Double Tree hotel in San Jose.
  • April 29 is our district conference.
  • Rotary International Women’s Day will be held on March, 19.
  • Area 9 – Our Area picked Hope’s Corner for their Area Project.
  • Some Rotary International News
    • We raised a record US$1.2 million on Giving Tuesday in November, and by the end of the Rotary year, we raised more than US$434 million for The Rotary Foundation — far exceeding our goal of US$410 million
    • The Rotary International Board convened the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force to assess the state of DEI within Rotary and develop a comprehensive plan to establish these values even more firmly in our culture. To develop the plan, the task force used the responses from 31,000 members around the world who reported their experiences with DEI in Rotary through our first diversity, equity, and inclusion survey.
    • The board also approved a new DEI code of conduct
    • Rotary International and Rotary Foundation released a position statement on COVID-19.  It is a strong and positive statement in support of science-based ways to combat the disease.  It is on the RI website.  Please take time to read it.
 
SPEAKER:
  • Dan Mitchell – City and Community Engagement for Nuro AI.  Updated the club on their company and what is new with autonomous vehicles.  The club was very engaged with a lot of questions.
