Rotary Club of Mountain View
January 24, 2023

President Sanjay Daves Greeting:  Good afternoon and welcome to the Rotary Club of Mountain View, where we’re more than a club, we’re a family!”

Pledge of Allegiance. Sanjay invited Honorary Member Thomas Dittler to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Greeter & Thought for the Day: Cathy Merrill shared the top seven common traits of a good leader – willingness to listen, perseverance, honesty, selflessness, decisiveness, trust, and integrity. She noted that actions speak louder than words and quoted Winston Churchill describing the traits many Rotarians live by: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

Visitors and Guests:
Judy introduced her guest and good friend, Thomas Moran.
Sanjay welcomed honorary club member Thomas Dittler who lives in Munich, Germany.

Announcements:
Reminder: The Crab Feed will be February 4, and we need everyone helping! The sign-up sheet for times and roles was passed around again. Heather asked members to give her your meal head count based on tickets you’ve sold, by Monday, January 29. She noted we want to have enough crab to go around, but we don’t want to over purchase and unnecessarily waste funds.

Speaker: Sanjay introduced our speaker and guest Julie Vo, Director of the Mountain View Los Altos Adult School who shared her grandparents story coming to the United States as refugees from Vietnam in the 1970’s and starting over in a new place with new language and customs. Their story eventually leads to Julie as the family’s first generation to graduate from college with a Bachelor’s from Cal Berkeley in Education and a Master’s in Education from Stanford.  Vo has more than 20 years’ experience in the field of education. She described how adult education programs like those provided at the Mountain View Los Altos Adult School directly benefit the community with career technical education programs in health sciences, business and information technology, ESL classes, GED programs and related support services. Vo shared several stories produced by the students themselves describing the benefits they have received from the school. The Adult School also offers self-supporting community interest programs for older adults in areas such as the arts, music, dance, languages, plus physical fitness and wellness.
