Meeting Notes - June 11, 2019

 

 

 

Good afternoon!   I’d like to welcome you to the Rotary Club of Mountain View.
My name is Bert Raphael, your President for 2018-2019. 

 

Our Rotary International theme for this year is “Be the Inspiration”. 
Our Mountain View Rotary Club theme is “Have Fun Being the Inspiration.”  

 

Introduction of Visiting Rotarians & Guests:  Tom – we had 4 visiting Rotarians today.  Glynis Hayes from Victoria Island, Diane Reinhart, Kirty Vadalkar and RC Dombinli Vadalkar.

 Membership efforts -- Bring a friend to Rotary!

International Conference, Report by Paul – he said the Conference was amazing with thousands of Rotarians from different cultures from all around the world.  He also shared that he and friends hiked the Hars mountains in former East Germany.   With that he joined the President’s Club.

Vocational Talk: Scott   Scott indicated he had a two track career: 1) 35 years with the Army National Guard from which he retired, and 2) on-going work with Non-Profits.   He is currently working at Villa Siena which started in 1965.  Dr. Steve was the visiting physician and they have a person there who is 105 years old!

 

 

Dr. Jack Higgins, a past visitor to our club and a member of the Rotary Club of Los Altos, will give us an update on some of the international projects we have supported, and projects we might support in the future. We have been providing support to various international projects selected and managed by the Los Altos club.

 

He discussed the on-going work with the Los Altos Rotary AIDS Project (LARAP) that our club has contributed our DDF towards.  The project has been going on for 30 years in Africa including Liberia, Tanzania, and Uganda as well as in Nepal.  The project’s goal is to reduce mother to child HIV transmission during child birth by treating the mother before birth and the child for 6 weeks after.  The delivery of antiretroviral drugs as stopped HIV from being passed on in 98% of cases.  In Liberia, it is difficult for people to receive treatment due to the shortage of trained medical personnel and HIV testing.  Liberia is quite poor with about 85% of the population living on less than $1 per day. 

 

In Arusha Tanzania, they are working with the Foundation of African Medicine and Education (FAME).  They provide HIV testing kits and are working to prevent mother to baby HIV transmission.

Ms Cocciardi is a writer and filmmaker who has been studying the work of Leonardo da

Vinci for more than twenty years. She has lectured for many institutions and museums

about Leonardo da Vinci’s knot art. Her studies uncovered a facet of the

Renaissance painter’s work that was overlooked for centuries
