President Sanjay Dave’s Greeting:  Good Afternoon and welcome to the Rotary Club of Mountain View where: We’re More Than A Club…We’re a Family!!! 

Our International call to action for 2022-2023 is “Imagine Rotary.”  Our club’s call to action is “Imagine Mountain View Rotary.”

Greeter & Thought for the Day: Scott Johnson offered a quote by Illinois US Senator Tammy Duckworth: “Every day is a gift. Take advantage of every opportunity.” Senator Duckworth, a disabled Veteran, was highlighted in this month’s issue of the Rotary magazine. She at one time worked for Rotary International in extending Rotary clubs in Asia.
 
Introduction of Visitors:  Paul introduced his wife, Susan, who attended the club meeting to hear the speaker presentation.
 
Induction of New Member – Judy Crates: Judy Crates was inducted into Rotary Club membership. Judy, originally from Wisconsin, is a career educator and community leader/volunteer. She has been a school principal in our area multiple times and has also worked in a variety of other education-related positions. In her introduction, Sanjay spoke regarding her time as principal at Castro Elementary: “Judy was nothing less than a miracle worker at Castro. I witnessed a true leader at work. Through making some very tough decisions and working tirelessly with the teachers, parents, and community, she turned a struggling elementary school into a high caliber elementary school and uplifted school spirit.” Judy is sponsored into the Mountain View Rotary Club by Catherine, who has been a friend of hers for 26 years. We welcome Judy into our Rotary Club family!
 
 
Nominations for 2023-24 – Heather, Past President: Heather reported on the proposed board and committee chairs for this next Rotary year. Board positions are: President – Tori Atwell; Past President – Sanjay Dave; President Elect – Scott Johnson; Secretary – Bruce Barsi; and, Heather Stenshamn – Treasurer. Committee Chairs are: Cathy Merrill – RI Foundation; Jerlyann Mateo & Mandy Andrei – Membership Co-Chairs; Scott Johnson & Sanjay Dave – Youth Service Co-chairs; Susan Bacchi – Club Service; Jack Wong - International DDF Chair; Fred Storek – Club Endowment; Sanjay Dave – Club Scholarships. Vacant committee chair positions are: Community Service and PR.
 
General Club Announcements:
  • The Board approved Sheila Hodgkinson and Ken Schwaderer for honorary club memberships.
  • The Rotary Club Kick-Out Party, scheduled for June 24th at Toyon Farms Clubhouse, will be a mandatory club event.
  • Scott announced that our two Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Camp students will attend RYLA June 24-29. The students are Claire Florio, St. Francis High School, and Burla Solmaz, Mountain View High School. They will be asked to come and report their experience to our club at a future lunch meeting.
 
Speaker:
Jack Wong introduced our speaker, Darryl Ng, a Senior VP at Morgan Stanley. Darryl talked about estate planning for special needs and disabled individuals. He explained the differences between SSI, SSDI, Medicare, and Medicaid and how each of those relate to caring for individuals with special needs, and also focused on how to preserve these government benefits. He talked of ways to direct financial support to specials needs individuals through direct gifts, legacies, and also special needs trusts. The most common special needs trust is a “3rd Party Special Needs Trust.” Several questions were asked by those attending. Darryl provided helpful answers. We thank Darryl for sharing his time and expertise with us!
