Program – Tami Mulcahy, Los Altos Rotary – “Global Plastic Crisis” – Introduction by Jack
Plastics are an environmental issue, but they are even more of a health issue. Plastics disrupt the body’s hormone structure leading to cancer, diabetes and many other health related issues. This is a huge concern for children. Phthalates are a group of chemicals in plastics which can lead to attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity in children.
Worldwide, only 9% of plastics are recycled and 22% of discarded plastic is mismanaged. In the United States, it is even worse with only 4% of plastics being recycled. The majority of plastic waste in the United States is shipped to other countries to dispose of.
Microplastics are now found everywhere in our bodies and they are even found in newborns. 42% of plastic waste comes from food packaging. Another big source of plastic waste comes from clothing with socks being the biggest hazard.
People are becoming more aware of this problem and solutions are slowly being put into place. We can all contribute by avoiding single use, disposable plastic containers and instead use glass containers as much as possible.
Speaker Recognition Scott presented Tami with a laminated certificate of the Club’s donation to Polio Plus in her honor. Tami thanked the Club for the donation and returned the lamination part of the certification to be reused.
