Good Afternoon & welcome to the Rotary Club of Mtn. View where: We’re More Than A Club…We’re a Family!!! 

My name is Twana Karney, I’m your president for 2015-2016.

Our International call to action for 2015-2016 is to “Be a Gift to the World”

Our club’s call to action this year is “Being the Best We Can Be.”  Thank you all for joining us today.

General Club Announcements:
 
 
  • Thanks to Brodie for providing dessert today.
 
  • Twana/Walt: The Golf Tournament and BBQ dinner are on!!!: June 10th at Shoreline. Golf begins at 11:00 and dinner begins at 5:30 at Michaels. Golf is $60 and the dinner is $35 per person. Please make your checks payable to Mountain View Rotary Club and give those to Sheila today or on Friday. Walt has all the information.
 
  • Twana/Alan: Kick Out Dinner:  Save the date, Friday, June 24th.
 
  • Scott: Jim Cunningham is going to take the March speaker series spot that we needed, thank you Jim!
 
  • Twana Joint Board Meeting is Thursday, June 16th at 5:00 pm at CHAC.
 
  • Thank you for $2000 grant for living classroom. Introduced new farm to lunch program and have been able to fund all 8 of the programs that are in the mtv/whisman district.

Shingai Samudzi of the Oakland Rotary club is putting together an exchange similar to Rotary's group study exchange in South Africa this coming October through SeedAfrika (www.seedafrika.com. He is specifically focusing on identifying investment opportunities in early stage South African companies who are providing significant social benefit. If you are interested in participating in this, please do let Twana know.
 
The District is holding an event on June 23 to Toast and Toast the outgoing District Governor Susan Valenta and to welcome the incoming District Governor. All are welcome to attend the BBQ being held at Gilroy Gardens from 5:30 – 8:30 for $37. See the information on the clipboard going round.
 
Personal Sharing: If you share news with us and donate, those donations go to the Endowment and are used to generate scholarships for worthy local students.
 
Jim Spangler- Grandbaby was born Kennedy. Donated $100 do endowment fund.
Jack – Got to meet a few famous people in the past few weeks. 
Monique – Got to have lunch with Marsha Duloria (new CHAC director), great person.
Alan – Going back to little rock for 40th high school reunion.
 
SPEAKER INTRO:  Dave Cole introduced our speaker Candace Bowers of the Mountain View Historical Association, speaking on “Ohlone, Orchards, and Offices: A Brief History of Mountain View.”

1769 – 1883: DeAnza expedition came up and started putting down missions.
Crisanto Castro grandfather of Mountain View
Villa Francesca was built on the land where Rengstorff Park is now
The house was burned down in 1967
1849 John Whisman starts a stagecoach service on what is now El Camino Real
“The prune and apricot exposition”
Everything changed when the southern pacific railroad came through.
Businesses moved down to the train tracks and Castro started to get populated
 
Original Disney Rides were manufactured in Mountain View
The Wandermen House is in MTV and is privately owned, but sometimes has tours.
