Meeting Notes May 19, 2015

 

Meeting opened at 12:32- Pledge started by Jim Cunningham

 

Visiting Rotarians- Bob Adams and Stan Gardini from Los Altos, and Vincent Koenig from Belgium- Vincent told us a bit about his club, same size as Mountain View, and their charitable projects.

 

Visitors were Ria Toolis and Nasan Tarya who had heard about the club and were checking us out, and Kathy Rowls who is the manager of Don Giovanni's restaurant in Mountain View.  She attended as a guest of her boss, John Akaya, owner of Don Giovanni's- who is our newest member as of today!  John gave a brief and inspirational speech about what it is like to come here as an immigrant, and how difficult it is to succeed-- no place like the US for a success story like this.  John will be a great member for our club.

 

 Walt Joyce was this week’s 4-fer, and in keeping with the season, offered 3 quotations regarding politics-- in spite of the clever sentiment, the club seemed depressed to be facing 18 more months of relentless campaigning.

 

  Song master Phil then conjured up the truly awful "Are you happy in Rotary" song, which hopefully has been performed for the final time ever.

 

  Pres Elect Twana reported that the Roteract concept is being reworked so as not to be affiliated with any university, but rather function in an area- this is Rotary for the 18-29 yr old segment of the population- new concept already has 8 members, sounds good.

 

  Walt and Phil announced the MV Rotary golf tourney and BBQ for 6/12/15- at Shoreline, dinner at Michaels of Shoreline-- $65 for golf etc, $35 for dinner-- please sign up soon so that we can get a valid count for the course and dinner.  Contact Walt or Phil.

 

  Bob and Stan from Los Altos Rotary spoke briefly on the Mentor/Tutor program that is 20 yrs old and serves many Mountain View schools- they asked us to consider joining in to assist youth of all ages- 4 of our members have participated in the program in the past.  Contact the Mentor/Tutor program for more info.

 

   Bruce mentioned the Kick-out- last Sat in June at Michaels - be there to thank and razz Pres Alan for another fine year.  Sign up soon.

 

   Scott mentioned that we are dark next Tuesday, with an evening cocktail event at Cascal on Castro St- if you didn't sign up yet, please tell Scott that you are coming for planning purposes.

 

   Twana introduced our fine speaker, Shelly Wolfe or KMVT channel 15, from our own Mountain View cable TV station.  Shelly explained the many activities, and workshops put on by KMVT-- staff seems nearly to run around in circles to accomplish so much.  They have no reliable viewer number statistics, but know that many residents check them out for City Council meets, sporting events, and innovative local programming.  This is a real community resource, be sure to check them out and help if you can.
