SPEAKER:

Anita introduced our speaker, Matthew Dodder, Executive Director, Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society, who spoke about our local birds and how they are affected by climate change.

There are 50 million bird watchers in the US and 414 local bird species including woodpeckers, nuthathes, hummingbirds, jays, chickadees, hawks, doves, finches, bluebirds, and many others. Birdwatchers use field guides, binoculars and phone apps to identify birds. They look at field marks (characteristic e.g. in plumage), songs, behavior, and habitat.

Climate change is affecting seasonal food. For example, the reduction of caterpillars leads to decline in bird populations. In another example, drought reduces mud necessary for Cliff Swallow nests. Researchers use radio telemetry and banding to study changes in migration patterns and they are seeing a detrimental shift in arrival dates. In addition, light pollution is affecting bird migration since birds rely on stars to navigate.

Mark your Calendars:  Our Next Meeting will be on May 16th at Don Giovanni’s.
