Crab Feed:  Bill talked about the annual Crab Feed scheduled for Saturday, February 8, 2025. He noted that we are getting an earlier start this year on marketing and also creating a master calendar of dates and responsibilities. Please be on the lookout for an email from Bill inquiring as to what tasks you did last year and what they entailed.

Program: Jean Ikeda, Executive Director and Christy Flahavan, Program Director, Mentor Tutor Connection (MTC) joined us to talk about this important community resource for K-12 students in Mountain View and Los Altos public schools. The agency recruits, trains and supports qualified tutors and mentor volunteers to support students’ academic, social and emotional growth.

Los Altos Rotarians Marge Bruno launched the literacy aspect of the program in 1996, with Bob Adams introducing the mentor piece.

The focus is primarily on academics for K-8 students, and social-emotional support for high school students. Mentors/tutors make a year-long commitment, with many of them going on to be paired with their students for multiple years.

One-hundred percent of teachers polled see the positive impact that MTC has had upon their students. “There is magic in these relationships,” says one teacher, while one student said, “My mentor is my cheerleader in life.”

Last year, 177 volunteers supported 342 students. The program budget is $379,741, with 82 percent going directly to program support.

Check Presentation: Judy C. presented a check from our Club to MTC; these funds were made possible through proceeds from the Crab Feed.
