Meeting Notes - September 11th, 2018
Bert Raphael, President of the Mountain View Rotary Club for 2018-2019 welcomed everyone to the meeting.
Our Rotary International theme for this year is “Be the Inspiration”. Our Mountain View Rotary Club theme is “Have Fun Being the Inspiration.”
Pledge of Allegiance: Ken Schwaderer led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Thought for the Day: Twana Karney’s thought for the day was about “Patriot’s Day,” a day of remembrance about the events seventeen years ago today on 9/11.
Song of the Day: Songmaster Phil led the group in “America the Beautiful.”
Introduction of Visiting Rotarians & Guests: Tom Myers introduced two visiting Rotarians, Richard Scholerman from the Palo Alto University Club and also the Assistant District Governor for Area 9 and District Governor Tim Lundell from the Los Gatos Morning Club.

- Tom – Monthly Speaker Chairs for the year
- Tori – Monthly evening social hosts for the year:
- Anita Grossman invited the club to her home for an evening social on Tuesday, September 25th from 5:30pm to 7:30 pm and passed around a sign up sheet. She also said that she would send out an email. Tori Atwell mentioned that Tuesday, November 27th is still available for an evening social and Jim Cunningham volunteered to host a social at his home on that day.
- Foundation – Monique Kane had no cupcakes today because the District Governor will be recognizing Rotarians later in the program for donations to the foundation. She mentioned that almost everyone in the club has given or pledged to give to the Rotary Foundation this year.
- Dave /Jim –Community Service: Dave Cole reported that the Art and Wine Volunteering was a success, with the Rotary sign displayed at the back of the Glass and Ticket Booth where business was brisk. Rotarians Dave and his wife Cindy, Bert, Jerylann, Monique and her husband Bill and Jack with his daughters all came out to volunteer. Dave also mentioned that the volunteering at CSMA has started again and passed around a sign up sheet. He mentioned that Jim Cunningham had volunteered for this Saturday night at CSMA and that we could use another volunteer to work with him.
- Paul/Bert – Stevens Creek Trail cleaning project update
- Bert – District emphasis on membership. Rotaract dual memberships. Bring a friend to Rotary. Pick up a “What is rotary” reminder card. Bert asked members to be sure to view the circulating clipboard with the best response to give community members to the question “What is Rotary?”
- Bert – Sponsoring a new Rotaract club (Tori)
- Bert – Avenues of Service on October 4th– sign up on clipboard. So far, Tom and Bert plan to attend.
Personal Sharing/Announcements:
Bert wished Tori Atwell and Jerylann Mateo “Happy Birthday” yesterday and the club sang to them. Bert also mentioned that Frank Davila had a birthday last week and Frank let the club know that he turned 98 years old.
Scott Johnson shared that there will be a Mountain View City Council Candidates Forum during the regular meeting on Tuesday, October 2nd. He encouraged all the members to bring guests to visit the club.
Bruce Barsi said that he is hosting a non-Rotary event at his home that all were invited to attend. The event is a “Meet and Greet” with candidate John Hirakawa who is running for Santa Clara County Sheriff’s department on October 1st. Please contact Bruce for more information.
DG Richard Schoelerman, introduced today’s speaker District Governer Tim Lundell. Tim Lundell was born and raised in Portland. He came to the Bay Area in 1972 to attend Santa Clara University Law School and stayed. He joined the Los Gatos Rotary Morning Club in 2004 and has served in many roles before becoming District Governor. In addition, he has received several Rotary awards, including Rotarian of the Year and the Richard D. King award.
Program: District Governor Tim Lundell began his speech by talking of the many types of clubs in our District, including some of the largest clubs in the country. He also acknowledged that it is a struggle for many clubs to grow in today’s environment. He mentioned a saying that many are sitting in the shade of trees planted years ago. In Rotary, we are all sitting in the shade of trees planted by Paul Harris 150 years ago. It is time to plant new trees.
When he was the District Trainer, Tim decided that learning was a big part of being a Rotarian. Tim says that Rotary is now bringing back programs that involve learning and people are enthusiastic about those.Tim knows that learning precedes leadership, it leads to the confidence to step forward. The world needs Rotary as much as ever, with Rotarians stepping up to help. He feels fortunate to be serving in the year with the theme of “Be the Inspiration,” chosen by our current RI president who is from the Bahamas. We need to be the inspiration and create the vision that inspires people. The three tenants of his year as District Governor are Learning, Leadership, and Be the Inspiration and Vision of Rotary.
Summing up his Rotary experience, he said “I joined (Rotary) for business and leadership reasons and I stayed to change the world.”
District Governor Lundell then went on to recognize the club members listed below for pledges or donations to the Rotary Foundation, starting with those who donated at least $200, then those who donation at least $500 and finishing with those who donated $1000 or more.
