Program –

Tom Moran introduced our speaker today, Shanon Pestrong, Associate Executive Director of the YMCA of Silicon Valley, El Camino Branch.

She spoke about fitness trends at the Y. There is more emphasis on functional fitness rather than cardio. Exercise is geared to avoiding and reducing injury.

In the future AI and adaptable technologies will become more common. For example, you will carry a fob to set the exercise equipment to your specifications. There will be more adaptive coaching, recovery and stress integration, and personalization with health data.

At the El Camino Y, there are new spin bikes, free weights and power stations. Basketball Academies, chess clubs and swim programs are just some of the activities.

YMCA is different because it stresses the importance of community. Group fitness combats social isolation, instilling a sense of belonging and identity. Through this there is improved adherence leading to long-term success.

Tom thanked our speaker and recognized her with a donation to Polio Plus in her name.

Next Meeting – Next week is our Social at Olympus Caffe starting at 5:00 pm.  Our next lunch meeting is Tuesday, October 7th, and our Speaker is a surprise.  Our 3fer is Jarod.
