Mountain View Rotary Club Meeting

Scott announced he was subbing for President Tori. He reminded all of the Rotary International Theme: “Create Hope in the World.” Steve Nichols led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Scott led a song: “You’re a Grand Ole Flag.” Tom shared a thought for the day.

Steve introduced his guest, Elliott Lepler. Hal Taylor introduced his guest, Bob Lee. Paul introduced his guests, Susan (wife) and Angela Siddall.
Announcement
Paul gave updates on the upcoming service project this next weekend: volunteering for the Mountain View Art & Wine Festival. The club will staff 4 booths with 16 volunteers.
Speaker
Scott introduced Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian as the speaker. Supervisor Simitian shared a story that highlighted the 20th anniversary of legislation he authored while in the State Assembly that provided expedited compensation to a man wrongly convicted of a crime he did not commit. This legislative process became ugly and very partisan. This partisanship was overcome by legislators crossing party lines and passing SB 1302 that enabled deserved compensation for this man. Supervisor Simitian likened the above situation to politics today. He gave Rotarians an assignment to exhort elected officials to work across the aisle, to cross partisan boundaries and make decisions that are right and just.
