Meeting Recap 5/12/09

Phil Armi led us in a wonderful rendition of "Wonderful Feeling"
President Elect, Tom Myers introduced Visiting Rotarians and Guests:
- Emily Wu and Karen Simpson from "Peninsula Youth Theater"
- Laura Blakely from MVEF
Last Saturday we had a pre-Mothers Day celebration playing Bocce ball in Los Gatos. President Sheila was impressed with the turnout, but thinks we all could use a little practice. Chuck has posted more photos on our website. Thank you Cheryl Moller for arranging the event.
Wednesday, May 13th was the District Assembly at the DoubleTree Inn in San Jose. Thank you all who attended and took the time to learn more about Rotary and help to make Rotary a better organization.
Following the announcements from President Sheila, Walt Joyce reminded us about Golf at Shoreline on June 9th. BBQ will follow at Shoup Park in Los Altos. (Information about both events is posted on the Calendar under the Events Tab)
Alicia Crank presented checks to:
- Laura Blakely- MVEF: $500 check will be used to help the 4,500 students of the Whisman School District with Enrichment Programs at all the schools in the district.
- Emily Wu- PYT: $500 check will be used to help the Center Stage Project. Emily and Karen also invited Rotarians and friends to join them at the "Annual Gentry Gala benefiting Peninsula Youth Theater" see http://gentrygala09.eventbrite.com/ for more information.
- Judy Hanneman- Parters for a New Generation: $1,000 check will be used to help match mentors and tutors with kids in need
Fine Master- Jim Cunningham... need I say more? Hiro's birthday was May 9th.
John Hargraves introduced our Guest Speaker, Dr. Douglas Lewis from the Peninsular Vascular Center.
Dr. Lewis shared with us that vascular disease affects 50% of the world's population and is more common in women than men due to the third trimester of pregnancy. His talk, titled "Getting Closure on Abnormal Leg Veins," was enlightening.
After his talk Dr. Douglas Lewis was presented with a Certificate of Recognition and a contribution to Polio Plus was made in his honor.
Tuesday, May 19, Rob Swierk is to talk about the Grand Boulevard Initiative. Frank Davila is to greet us and give us a thought.
On May 26, we will be joined by the recipients of our Scholarship awards.
Next board meeting will be on May 20 in the CSA Board Room at 4:30PM.
