Sandi McDonough, our incoming President Elect, introduced Visiting Rotarians and guests - Welcome back to Jim Cochran who brought his wife Alice.
Sunday June 14th was Flag Day which we all should have celebrated, along with Peter Early, whose son Andrew William arrived early that day, weighing 7lbs 10oz. We send him and his family our good wishes!
Chuck Osborn also has something to celebrate. Chuck took third place in his division at the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon on Sunday June 14th. Chuck swam 1.5 miles from Alcatraz to the SF shore, then biked 18 miles through the city and then completed an 8 mile run. WOW, that is impressive!
Chuck is now participating in Team in Training to compete in the Long Course triathlon in Santa Barbara on August 22, 2009. He is competing in this event in honor of his Grand son, AJ Osborn, who succumbed to the effects of leukemia in February of this year. He was only 7 years old. Jim Cochran made an announcement to remember to donate to the Rotary Foundation if you have not already done so this year.
ALICIA also has news for us about her special event with C.H.A.S.E. The third annual CHASE on the PLAZA took place Sunday in the Community Plaza at the corner of State and Main streets in Los Altos. The free concert commemorates the birthday of local teen Chase Rogers, who died of a drug overdose in 2006. He would have been 21 years old this year.
The CHASE (Community Hope and Sober Events) foundation was established in January 2007 following Rogers' death. It is a donor-advised fund with the Los Altos Community Foundation. The organization has evolved into a community-based coalition that focuses on initiating opportunities for teens to avoid risky behaviors.
Alicia also announced that she has just been appointed the Program Director for Leadership Mountain View!
Another recent memorable happening was the Golf Tournament and Barbecue last week. We have to thank Walt, Phil, Jim Spangler and probably some others (whose names I don't know) for all their work. Shoup Park turned out to be a fine venue for the barbecue.
Not only for golf but for other services:- Walt Joyce to receive the District Governor's Certificate of Appreciation for his "effort, dedication and generous contribution in time" at the District.
The District Barbecue, Roast and Toast for Garry Citti is to be on July 9 at Saratoga Springs Resort. You can sign up through the District website.
