Meeting Recap, February 26, 2013

Announcements: 

Bert reported on the MV Rotary Ski Trip, thanking Bruce and Susanne for graciously hosting the gang and sharing that everyone had a wonderful time.

Judy and others attended the “Celebration of Life” service for Mary Marley on Saturday.  Our Club has donated $250 to the Rotary scholarship fund established in her name.

The District Conference in Napa is less than a month away, on March 21-24.  There will be a special tribute to 25 Years of Women in Rotary.  Our Board voted to place an ad in the program, up to $300.

Anita asked club members to review the slate of officers and let her know if there are any changes or additions to the list which will be voted on next Tuesday. Bruce commented that all Red Badgers will be eligible for Board service beginning in July 2013 so have at it!

Speaker:  Adam Scow, California Campaigns Director at Food & Water Watch

Adam is responsible for developing strategy for local, state, and national campaigns, and serves on the planning committee for the annual California Water Policy Conference sponsored by Public Officials for Water and Environment Reform.

Adam spoke to us on “fracking in California” – first providing an overview of what fracking entails and its impact on the environment:

●        Fracking goes much deeper than traditional drilling, with lots of water and toxic chemicals employed to break up rock (shale) for gas or oil.

●        Hazards included leaks, contaminated groundwater, air pollution, explosions and fires.

●        There is no safe way to frack.
