Meeting Summary July 24, 2012
President Judy welcomed members and guests at 12:30 PM at the Old Adobe in Mountain View.
Phil led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Thought for the Day: President Judy gave us Emerson’s definition of success.
We all sang “God Bless America”.
Visiting from Keelung Club in Taiwan was Rotarian Lance Lin.
Tom Myers introduced his visitors: his father, Stan Myers, and his brother–in-law, Dan Myers-Power. Bert Raphael introduced his wife, Anne.
Hal Taylor was with three students from St.Francis High school- Nicole Vu, Briant Vu and Alli Nguyen. They all enjoyed camp RYLA, made many friends and thanked the Club for sponsoring them. They were in the picture sent in last week’s meeting recap.
Finemaster Bruce being absent, President Judy asked for news or confessions so we learned that Bert Raphael has a new dog and Judy will be absent next week as she will be joining her daughter and family in Tahoe.
This year our donations to the President’s Club will be $150, of which $100 goes to our Club’s on-going operations and $50 to our local Endowment fund for scholarships. Members are urged also to become Double Sustainers, with the money going directly to the Rotary Foundation.
President Judy and eleven others together attended the Giants Game in San Jose last Saturday. Judy went on from there to hear music in Los Altos where Alan Goodman was playing.
Chuck asked again if you expect to miss a meeting or bring guests you should inform him through our website by Monday morning before the meeting. (The cut-off time has been adjusted as the time was East Coast time. It will now be noon PST) We need to know to know for the caterer how many meals should be provided. You are also urged to consider whom you might invite as a guest and who might consider joining Rotary.
Save the date- Thursday, October 25 when the annual Avenues of Service program will take place at the Doubletree in San Jose. The Club will pay for members who attend.
Bert Rafael was our speaker:- MOUNT KILIMANJARO the subject. He and Anne together in 1960 climbed the highest mountain in Maine. Later they climed Mount Whitney and for their 25th anniversary in 1987 went to see Mount Everest. They planned to celebrate their 50th anniversary with a safari in Kenya and Tanzania when Anne suggested climbing Kilimanjaro. Bert’s splendid pictures and account of their trip to the 19,340 foot summit kept us enthralled. We hope to hear later about the safari.
Next week, July 31, will be a regular meeting at 12.15 pm at the Old Adobe conducted by Past President Anita. The Speaker will be Deirdre Marlowe telling about Peninsula Bridge.
We are looking for a person to be the Three-fer as it was originally scheduled to be a social meeting.
