Visiting Rotarians- PDG Roger Hassler, and PDG Bill Mahood, PA Univ Pres Steve Ross and his successor—PDG Hassler regaled us briefly on awards that Mtn View Rotary could receive, and thanked us for over and above foundation and Polio Plus contributions.
Alan Goodman introduced 6 St Francis interacters, and their advisor, Sheri Thomas. They all spoke eloquently about what the Rotary concept of giving has meant to them. One student has already earned a Paul Harris fellow award for her special projects in India which she has facilitated on-line and with personal visits. Once again, our future is in safe hands with these high quality young people.
Gerry Felix told the club about Health Hunger and Humanities grants, as part of the work of the Rotary Foundation—more good reasons to give generously.
Walt Joyce reiterated our upcoming Rotating Dinner- 4/27/12—looking good for attendance and location hosts. Price reasonable, and food by Cuccina Venti. Walt and Phil also mentioned our annual golf tourney and BBQ for 6/8/12. Golf at Shoreline, $65 for golf, cart, tee prize and skill prizes, BBQ to be at the PA Elks club, and cost to be determined —come to one or both or either. Not a fund raiser, but a FUN raiser- members and guests of all ages and abilities welcome- hope to have some Kiwanians, and folks from other Rotary Clubs as guests for golf & the BBQ.
Our program was put on by Skye Delano, the exec director of E cubed (E3) Youth Philanthropy Board. The organization gives $10,000 each year to local youth projects in Mtn View, Los Altos and neighboring cities. Their funding is provided by the Los Altos Community Foundation, which is in turn funded by the Packard Foundation of Los Altos. Amanda McFarland and Ben Merideth who are board members and high school seniors explained how the board is selected, and the process they go through to provide small grants to youth projects, and other community projects such as our very familiar Cops and Gobblers event. This process certainly seemed to be both worthwhile to the community, and especially educational to the young board members who learn how to pick a realistic project and how to monitor it and measure it’s ultimate success. Once again, our young community leaders are receiving opportunities to shine and being well prepared for present and future success.
The next meeting will be a fellowship meeting at the Cantakerous Fish on Castro in MTV @ 5 :30. Cost is $10 for drinks and snacks. Bring spouse, friend, or potential member. The Board will meet @ 4:15, prior to the regular meeting.
