Speaker: Janet Hebert, Breast Cancer Survivor. Janet told us her story and gave us great information on risk factors, early detection & things in our control. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in US in your lifetime. This year in US 200,000 women will be diagnosed & 2000 men will be diagnosed. #1 Risk Factor is being a women and #2 is aging. These risk factors are out of our control but there are 4 that are in our control: #1 Weight gain, maintain a consistent weight; #2 Being active; #3 Limit alcohol consumption; #4 Avoid hormone replacement therapy. Early detection is very important; make sure you do these three things: #1 Do mammograms; #2 Clinical breast exams – see your doctor; #3 Self breast exams – monthly exam & look at them. “Remember they are grandchildren not children.” Janet provided cards to help us remember to do exams and the important reasons for you to write why to do them.
