Meeting Summary of May 7th
President Judy opened with a greeting.
This year’s theme is “Peace Through Service” and our local district’s theme is “Mission Membership”
Roger gave the ‘Thought of the Day” by talking of Korea and that there won’t be a war as China does not want one. He said it’s a very nice place to visit.
Phil Armi led us in a patriotic song.
Two visiting Rotarians were introduced, Joe Hamilton, District Governor of District 5179 and Arley Marley, our past District Governor.
No visitors were present except the students receiving scholarships who were introduced later.
Judy thanked everyone for the great time at our Rotating dinner from the appetizers and pink martinis at Walt and Patricia’s lovely home, to main meals at several homes to dessert at Bruce and Suzanne’s nice home.
Announcements: the Kick Out is Sunday, June 30 and it is one of our mandatory events. Anita announced that we will celebrate our outgoing President Judy along with a little bit of a roast as well as welcoming our incoming President Bruce.
Bruce shared his excitement over CHAC’s now being the official owners of the new building at 590 W El Camino. He said CHAC is going form a small building to a larger building that will serve CHAC services for many years to come. In honor of this exciting news Bruce joined the President’s Club.
Bruce than played his Jeopardy game. Fred joined the President’s Club instead of playing the game as he is a new grandfather to a baby boy! Jerylann and Heather were fined.
Program: Ken introduced our program of giving our scholarships to very deserving students. He said that our giving of these scholarships to students is a way that our Rotary Club invests in our future. As we heard their stories it became clear that these students will give back to society when they are adults. To get a scholarship they need to have at least a 3.0, most had 3.5 and up to 4.4. They also have to have done much community service. One student from MVHS wants to become a lawyer to help with immigration. Another Mountain View High student is going to a college in New York to learn to do therapy through music.
One Los Altos High student wants to work from a variety of ways via the media in order to have a positive impact on society. The other Los Alto student was heading to Chapman U to continue his studies in music to become an Opera singer.
The St. Francis student will go to Brown U to study neuro-science and business with the hope of becoming a doctor.
One Adult ED student will attend De Anza then transfer to a 4 year college to become a teacher.
One Alta Vista Student is already at Foothill and plans to become a teacher or counselor.
An Alta Vista student wants to get a BA in Automotive Technology at Sacramento Tech College. The other Alta Vista student wants to be a paramedic and will attend San Mateo College. Some of the stories of the lives of these students were deeply touching. Most of students were in Interact. One of them said that we inspire each other. They are inspired by us and we are inspired by them!
Following the presentations Arley presented Anita with an award for her year as president our club gave 100% to the Foundation!
Following Joe Hamilton praised our club for its rise in membership, our great golfers and that we would again reached 100% goal for Judy’s year! He presented Judy with the Peace for Service Presidential Citation. He also referred to our being #2 of the contest winners.
He also praised and congratulated the students for their scholarships and successes. He told them its important where you end out in life. He said not so much a question of what are you going to do in life as who are you going to be in life?
Judy closed the meeting at 1:30. She asked that we fulfill her wishes for our club and to wear your Rotary Pin!
In addition, at last week's meeting we had a chance to meet our Short Term Exchange student and her parents.
