Rotary Club of Mountain View Meeting Notes February 8, 2022

Club Announcements:
*4th Tuesday of the month social, February 22nd to meet at Cascals @ 5pm.
*Sanjay shared he sent a poll for club to volunteer at Hopes Corner service project for April or May, we hope we can get 15-20 members and friends to partake.
*Environmental special project: Club Board approved to be part of solar project at the Mt. View Non-Profit Campus at 748 Mercy street. This project is funded by 5 Rotary Clubs (Mt. View, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Los Gatos Morning and Los Altos), Hammond Climate Solutions Foundation, the Los Altos Methodist Church and SunWork, estimate cost with volunteer labor valued of $84,500. SunWork will schedule training (mandatory for all volunteers including essential safety information) and work days, and provide safety harnesses and all required tools. SunWork anticipates 6 work days requiring 4 to 6 volunteers each day.
*Club Charities campaign began and we raised $3000! Kudos team for mailing checks. Mail donations to:

Committee Chair shares:
*Scholarship Chair: Ken shared the structure of the high school scholarship process. Committee this year is Ken, Judy, Paul and Bruce. Required meeting March 24th at 9am. Last year 2021, four scholarships of $2000 were given and expectation is same for 2022.
*Club Foundation/Endowment Board: the investment fund’s interest earned funds annual high school scholarships. Board members year 2022-23 nominated are: Ken, Paul, Bert, Heather and Tori. Tom made a motion to approve this slate, second by Sanjay. Ken nominated these 5 individuals as board members to begin now, second by Judy; majority vote approved.

Upcoming Rotary Events or Community Ask:
*Year 2023 Rotary Peace Fellowship application: do you have a friend or neighbor’s child that may qualify? Goal is to grow leaders to prevent & resolve conflict by offering academic training, field experience and professional networking. Application and details online.
*Jennifer Jones Meet and Greet on February 27th, 7-9pm at Blackhawk Museum in Danville hosted by D5170. Sold out but 1 ticket available.
*Int’l Women’s Day seminar hosted by ‘Women in Rotary’ is Sunday, March 13th at 4pm in downtown SJ. Registration is online
*District 5170 Conference is April 22-24th in Danville and San Ramon. Online registration.
Guest Speakers: Scott introduced fellow Rotarian, Dr. Stephen Nichols, who is keeping busy on the golf course in Kaui. Stephen reminded us a few key Covid-19 virus facts: incubation period for most recent omicron variant is 2-3 days, most infectious period is 2 days before symptoms and 5 days after, antigen tests will detect if a high virus load, PCR tests is a very sensitive.
What’s changed from a year ago? Mutation capacity is huge. Observation is virus is airborne, ie. coughing, sneezing; masks news is N95 is recommended. Treating means with highest effectiveness is vaccination to prevent hospitalizations.
Long-term COVID observations: symptoms that last longer than 4 weeks, primarily brain fog. The cognitive changes are most concerning and brain abnormalities are similar to Alzheimer. Virus is attacking the nervous system and brain. Optimistic that researching this virus will assist with understanding other diseases that affect brain and cognitive disorders.
Dr. Nichols foresees our future is a vaccine/booster, hopefully mixed with influenza shot to prevent major illness and hospitalization.

MTC is seeking a new Mentor Program Manager, primarily focused on MTC’s mentor program at Alta Vista High School in addition to supporting other program initiatives and projects. This part-time position is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working with volunteers and high school students.
