President’s Greeting: 
 
Good afternoon!   I’d like to welcome you to the Rotary Club of Mountain View.
My name is Bert Raphael, your President for 2018-2019. 
 
Our Rotary International theme for this year is “Be the Inspiration”. 
Our Mountain View Rotary Club theme is “Have Fun Being the Inspiration.”  
 
Introduction of Visiting Rotarians & Guests:  Paul – We had many visitors today including many Rotarians.  These included Andrew Briggs, Carlos Pineda, Renee Zimmerman, Eric Eberle, Greg Gomon, Jerry Moison, Jack Kelly, Fiora Burke, Lisa Blagof, Kamal Della and Roy Love.

Sawye Raygani
  1. Sawye Raygani is a senior at Los Gatos High School, who will be attending Stanford next fall to study Human Biology and Economics. She loves cooking, kickboxing, and reading New Yorker Cartoons. Sawye is the Chair of the Los Gatos Youth Commission and Captain of the Speech and Debate Team and serves on the Community and Senior Services Commission of Los Gatos. She and her best friends also run a hiking club to explore trails in the Bay Area and take pictures of cool fungi.

  4. School Activities: Involved in graphic design and computer science.
  5. Future Goals:  Plans to attend Tufts University next year.
 
Clarissa Lara
  1. GRADE/SCHOOL: Grade 10, Dr. TJ Owens Gilroy Early College Academy (GECA)
  2. ROTARY SPONSOR/CONTACT: Gilroy Sunrise Rotary Club –
  3. ACTIVITIES: Clarissa is a sixteen-year old Gilroy resident who attends the Dr. TJ Owens Gilroy Early College Academy, a dual-enrollment program, where Clarissa is simultaneously pursuing her high school diploma and her Associates degree. She has represented the school in the Santa Clara County Poetry Out Loud competition for two years in a row (2018 and 2019). She is an active member in the school's Writing Club and Red Cross Club. With her mother's support, Clarissa founded a Girls Who Code Club at the Gilroy Library, and she is facilitating a "Google CS First" Class at the library as well. The clubs seek to foster local middle school and elementary school students' interest in STEM-related careers by exposing them to the foundations of coding and computer science. She is an avid reader, an artistic spirit, and a proud older sister to her younger seven-year-old brother.
 
Jessica Aaron
 
 
And the winners were….. Jessica and Terry! Jessica spoke about global illiteracy and the Rotary Foundation’s inspiring role in helping to reduce it.  Terry spoke of the inspiration some of our United States Presidents have gotten from Presidents before them like Lincoln was inspired by George Washington or FDR being inspired by Teddy Roosevelt.
 
And the runner ups were….. Clarrisa and Sawye! Clarrisa spoke about inspiration from leaders like Gandhi and the salt march, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King, both striving to help others.  Sawye was inspired by inspirational posters and super heroes and how as humans, we are flawed, but have the ability to learn from our mistakes and to be compassionate.
