Meeting Notes June 16, 2015

 

·         Alan opened with “We’re more than a club we’re a family” and “Week 51 club held hostage”

·         Ernie led for the pledge

·         Phil led the song “You’re a Grand Old Flag”

·         Monique gave a spontaneous ‘thought of the day’

·         3-fer for next week in Anita.

·         Twana said she’ll update the club on her trip to the international conference to Brazil soon. She thanked the club for the opportunity of going. There were no visiting Rotarians. Tom introduced Naseem who will be joining the club.

·         Alan thanked Monique for bringing the dessert, Phil for his great job putting on the BBQ last Friday and Walt for organizing the golf tournament.

·         Alan reminded the club that the retirement party for Monique is this Friday, June 19^th at 6 p.m.  at the Fremont Country Club in Los Altos Hills. Dress is business casual.

·         Another pending social event is the Kick-Out for Alan the following Friday, June 26 at 6 p.m. at Michaels of Shoreline-6 to 7 is cocktail hour, dinner at 7 followed by a ‘major production” in honor of Alan’s year as President.

·         Bruce gave an update on Hal who had a stroke and is in rehab and his condition will take some time to hopefully recover from. Bruce will visit him again to give a further update. A card was signed for him by members today.

·         Final Board of directors meeting will take place this Thursday, June 18 at 5:00 at CHAC. It will be a joint meeting of the current board and the incoming board.

·         The club received several thank you letters re the grant received. They were from Living Classrooms, CSA, Day Workers Center and CHAC.

·         Alan reminded the club that there is still time to join the Presidents Club

·         Twana introduced the speaker Budd MacKenzie who gave a presentation of his work in Afghanistan building schools and helping rebuild the lives of victims of the log extended wars. His non-profit organization is called Educating Children in Afghanistan-Trust in Education. They’ve built several schools and started soccer teams. They’ve provided pencils, paper, computers, clothes and for the soccer teams proper shoes. He and his volunteers were able to convince the women in charge of the girls to let them play soccer as well as the boys. Some volunteers have knitted warm socks and hats as this is what is often missing for them.

·         When there were to be town meetings with the Taliban only men were invited. When asked why women could not attend, the man in charge said they have a smaller brain. They’ve got a long way to go regarding women issues. Women are apparently beginning to speak out. Budd reminded us that it took 70 years from the first protest from women in the US to get to vote.

·         Budd said their new president is doing a good job of leading and people fear he’ll be killed.

·         His organization only has one paid employee for 16 hours a week. All others are volunteers.

These are but a few highlights of his very inspiring talk.

·         Alan thanked him and said a donation to RotaCare will be made in his honor.
