Good Afternoon & welcome to the Rotary Club of Mtn. View where: We’re More Than A Club…We’re a Family!!! 

Our International call to action for 2015-2016 is to “Be a Gift to the World”

 Our club’s call to action is “Fun Through Service".  This year’s club focus is “Being the Best We Can Be.”  Thank you all for joining us today.

  • Twana: There will be no meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 24th because of the Thanksgiving Holiday.

 

 

District Announcements:

 

  • Ending Polio is now within our sights. Africa has been polio free for over a year and we have only two countries left (Pakistan and Afghanistan) where polio is being eradicated. Donations are needed. The Gates Foundation has offered a two for 1 matching donation so that, for example, if you donate $100 through the RI website, it will mean $300 goes toward ending polio. Check out the RI website.

 

  • Youth Service Project Faire: Dec. 2, 4:30-6:00 pm, Interact leads District Cabinet meeting—6:30-8:00pm. India Community Ctr. 525 Los Coches St. Milpitas. Sign Up Sheet going around.

 

The District Conference on April 29 – May 1 is looking for sponsorships.

 

 

SPEAKER INTRO:  Dick Lubman to introduce speaker Shanna Atherton, City of Mountain View, Environmental Specialist to talk about Shoreline.

 

Shanna gave an in-depth History of the Shoreline area beginning with the Ohlone Indian’s who first inhabited and used the area which transitioned under the Spanish Mission influence beginning in 1776 and then ownership was handled by treaties, land grants and subdivisions up until major flooding occurred in 1955 in the Mountain View area. Prior to the purchase by the City of Mountain View the 750 acres of land was owned by the Rengstorff family, a Germany emigrant who established a shipping port for various South Bay materials.  The City purchased the sight with the primary purpose of flood control for the local area, needing to raise the land twenty feet to protect the area.  From 1970 to 1983 this first every “sanitary” landfill was used under a contract with the City and County of San Francisco for landfill using a unique (at the time) process of layering garbage and clay (bay mud) caps over the top to prevent leakage of toxic materials and gasses.  Once closed in 1983 the City moved to transform the area into more a more public useable area striving to keep the impact to a minimum.  This area is a jewel for our community with miles of trails and open space.
