President’s Greeting by Heather:  Good Afternoon & welcome to the Rotary Club of Mountain View where: We’re More Than A Club…We’re a Family!!!  Our International call to action for 2021-2022 is “Serve to Change Lives”.  Our club’s call to action is “As a Family We Serve to Change Lives”. 

Greeter & Thought for the Day: Tori shared thoughts about 9/11 and how our lives have never been the same since. 

*Sept 11th was MV Art and Wine Festival: Cathy thanked folks for assisting at the Art & Wine Festival, Jack and daughter, Scott and Joan. Scott shared the excitement of online payment systems. 

*Cathy is looking for three people to work with her on her Leadership Class project.

*Heather shared Mountain View Whisman School District seeks volunteers to serve on their Bond Oversight Committee as well as their Parcel Tax Committee which meet four times a year for about an hour to review financial documents. If interested, contact Heather to get you in touch with Committee Chairman. 

*CSA ‘Treat Yourself’ seeks donations for their event on Sept 25^th. At this time, the key need is Men’s boxer underwear S-XXXL, women’s bikini underwear S-XXXL and women’s sports bra’s S-XXXL. *Heather announced Board meeting is Wed, Sept 15th at 5:30pm; any ideas or concerns, please let her know. 

*The Friends of Stevens Creek Trail’s annual event, the Trailblazer Race, is a fun and healthy activity for the whole family. This year, the 27th edition, will be a Virtual Race to ensure participants’ safety. Perhaps you and Rotary Mountain View members would like to participate. You can do so by registering here to take part during the 16-day race window: September 11-26. You can run a 5k or 10k route and upload your time to compare with your past self or other runners. There’s one registration fee per person regardless of how many events you complete; you can upload as many run times as you like during the race window-or simply take a more leisurely 3 mile (5k) walk! (Walk times can not be uploaded). The Trailblazer Race raises community awareness and essential funds, allowing the Friends to promote community involvement and pride in the completion, enhancement, and enjoyment of trails and wildlife corridors in the Stevens Creek watershed. Your support is greatly appreciated. It's a great race for a great cause!

*The Mountain View Public Safety Foundation is sponsoring its annual Fundraising Gala on Saturday, November 6^th at the new Ameswell Hotel on Moffett Blvd. in Mountain View.  The event features dinner and dancing and promises to be a night to remember.  For more information and to purchase tickets, you can go to mvpsf.org.

 

*October 2nd is Avenues of Service (objective is support and share 5 Avenues of Rotary). Registration is now live for virtual or in-person event : Thursday, 9/30 5-8pm via Zoom (Rotary Best practices of 3 key area and then 30 min breakout by Ave of Services); Saturday, 10/2 11:30-3pm is hybrid of project faire and keynote is Linda Coble, first CBS female anchor of Honolulu. * Nominations are now being accepted for District Gov 2024-25, Past Presidents are eligible to apply and Heather would be honored to nominate you! 

 

SPEAKER: Christine Salinas, Gift Officer at Life Moves. Recently, LifeMoves opened their first transitional housing center in Mountain View.  Christine Salinas is a Major Gifts Officer at LifeMoves, the most extensive interim housing and shelter services provider for homeless clients in Silicon Valley.  In this role, she facilitates financial and volunteer opportunities for community members interested in supporting LifeMoves’ mission to rapidly return homeless clients to self-sufficiency and stable housing. Christine has worked in the nonprofit sector for over 14 years, where she started her career as a K-8 Spanish teacher. Christine has raised more than $4M in support of workforce development, early education, foster youth, and family wellness initiatives. She is a Certified Fundraising Executive with an executive certificate in Nonprofit Management from Georgetown University. Christine has lived in Mountain View since 2006 and is an active bilingual parent leader in the Mountain View Whisman School District, where she currently sits on the Graham Middle School Site Council.

LifeMoves is trying to solve homelessness in Silicon Valley. Believe everyone deserves a home.  Provide interim housing and assistance so people can be self-sufficient. Funding   from government contracts roughly 50%, the other half from corporations and charities.  

Basic facts on homelessness: Numbers lower than people think on homeless people having drug or alcohol issues, or mental illness.  Those numbers are closer to 20%, economics tend to be the major driving factor(s). Have shelters through the area (14 total shelters), Mountain View’s is on Leghorn.  Serve an average of 1,300 people/clients a night at sites. 25% of beds filled every night are by children.  Also have 3 temporary Housing sites, 3 permanent housings sites and 6 day service sites and a safe parking program in Redwood City.  Provide Intensive Case Management to help clients achieve long term solutions: Health, Mental, basic skills and life skills, financial literacy, basic nutrition.

New housing model just launched in Mountain View opened in May of 2021, and the county, state and City built the shelter that serves 10 family, individual units that can be moved and provide privacy. Meals, laundry, internet and privacy at this site. Each unit costs $160,000 to set up. Jack and partners will be sponsoring an event.
