Meeting of March 5 Recap

President’s greeting – And call to action for 2012 & 2013 – PEACE THROUGH SERVICE.  Our local focus in the District and Club is MISSION MEMBERSHIP.

The pledge was led by Anita Grossman

The thought for the day was given ay Pres. Elect Bruce Barsi.

The song for the day was led by Phil Armi – “America the Beautiful.”  We also sang Happy Birthday to Bill Maston and Fred Storek.

There were no visiting Rotarians or Guests of the Club.

We were privileged to have Scott Johnson give his Red Badge talk.  Things you might not know about Scott:  He was a Rotarian in the Newport Beach Sunrise Club; he has 8 grandchildren; he was asked to join our club by Anita Grossman, Jerylann Mateo and others. He is the Marketing Director for Villa Sienna.

Finemaster Bruce asked for confessions:  Jim Spangler went to New York and saw the opening night of Cinderella.  Bob Williams spent an evening with the Sister City group.  Bruce also had several members play Rotary Jeopardy; Jim Cochran, Monique Kane and Heather Stenshamn.

Bert Raphael announced that we were set for a short term student exchange this summer.  A girl from Mountain View High School will visit France and bring back a girl from there when she returns.  He is looking for a couple of female “counselors” who will be available to speak to the girls if needed.

Past President Anita nominated a slate of officers and Board members for the 2013 – 2014 Rotary Year:

Nominations were closed and the above were elected unanimously.

President Judy reminded us to register for the District Conference before the price of the rooms increased.  The Conference will be held March 21 – 24 in Napa.

The program was introduced by Bill Maston.  He showed us the first part of a video about the problems facing the Fiji people.  He has been working on a project there for many years.  His daughter became interested and first invited some students to spend a week on the island for a biology project and after several years some teachers became interested and have spent some summer vacations there reaching the locals how to pollute less and to help save the coral reefs. Rotarians Fred Storek and Jim Spangler have spent time on the islands to see first hand the problems that exist.  Next week he will show part two of the video.

Remember to attend all meetings possible (letting us know if you WON’T be able to attend); arrive by 12:15; take on at least one club responsibility during the year; bring in a new member; and wear your Rotary Pin!
