General Club Announcements:
· In honor of Rotary International’s 107th birthday, the District is organizing and underwriting most of the costs of a group ad. Our Board has authorized participation in an Area 9 ad that will run in the Palo Alto Daily - Fusion section this week and in The Image section on March 6th.

Scholarship interviews will take place in March for 6 schools. Please contact Ken Schwaderer if you want to be part of an interview team if you have not already done so. Usually there are three students from each school and three Rotarians on the interview team at a school. The process takes usually 2 hours. We have printed criteria and forms.

SPEAKER INTRO & PRESENTATION: Ken introduced Susan Harlan and the program:
Seniors and Safety by Susan Harlan, MA, CMC
Susan presented the topic: “Seniors and Safety”. Susan is a Certified Geriatric Care Manager and has a Master’s Degree in Gerontology. She is an elder care consultant with CONCERN / El Camino Hospital. They provide help to seniors, family members, friends of seniors, and caregivers.
Home safety is not just for seniors, but affects many of us. 81% of all home injuries are related to a fall, and most of these falls occur in the bathroom at home. According to the Center of Disease Control, about 235,000 people over the age of 15 years were reported to have visited an emergency room from injuries suffered in a bathroom. Almost 14% were hospitalized. The injury rate is 72% higher for women than for men related to falls. One interesting note is that the older we get, the more injuries happen around the toilet.
Many of the falling injuries can be prevented by having grab bars inside the tub and shower and next to the toilet. Susan commented of other home safety concerns and recommended keeping a short easy to read list of emergency phone numbers by each phone in your house.
