            Lauren Herbstman and Sally Meadows from Los Altos Rotary, Steve Nelson, Deborah Beresford,

                        Joe Lichtenger, a member prospect living in Mountain View.

 

General Club Announcements:

 

·        Jerylann Mateo has been down for the count with pneumonia – sending lots of get well wishes her way.

 

·        Jim Cochran passed around a sign up sheet for members willing to deliver food to the RotaCare Clinic on Thursday evenings.  All were covered except August 9 and August 30.

 

·        District Conference June 1 – 3, a clipboard was passed for sign-ups.

 

·        Stevens Creek Trail Clean-up is this Saturday, 9 AM, Whisman Park on Easy street off Middlefield.

 

·        We are still working on getting club meetings back to Mountain View, taking price, commute and parking into consideration.  The Board will discuss next Tuesday.  Send them your opinion.  Alan requested “the sooner the better”.

 

·        Community Service Minute – Jim Spangler: Grant applications will be out next week.

 

·        Tom Myers:  The Kickout of the President will be 6/24/12 (Sunday) at Michaels.

 

·        Jim Cunningham:  The rotating dinner is Friday, April 27; 5:30 PM at Cunningham’s to start.

 

·        Next week is our Fellowship Meeting at 5:30 p.m. at The Cantankerous Fish. The Board will be meeting at 4:00 at CHAC.

Speaker:  Rich Casey - Los Altos AIDS Project Chairman.

 

Mr. Casey described the problem of childhood AIDS to us: 

            In the USA 100 children are infected with AIDS each year.

            In Africa 300,000 children are infected with AIDS each year.

The Los Altos Rotary AIDS Project started in Liberia where 100,000 are infected with HIV.  This includes 10,000 infants.

 

They worked with $20 per birth which gives 90% control of HIV.

 

They had a grant of $60,000 which was used to train 50 health care workers and provide medication which saved 5000 lives.

 

He showed slides and a video of the work being done in Liberia.  He expects to submit a plan for using $250,000 of a grant from The Rotary Foundation.

 

They later expect to expand their efforts to other African countries. 15 clubs have been supporting the Los Altos effort with 5 clubs from the Inland Empire providing support.
