Meeting Summary April 2, 2013
President Judy welcomed everyone at 12.30 pm at the Adobe Building.
Hal led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Sheila made us consider the Gender of a Computer and Phil led us in God Bless America.
Visiting from Los Altos Rotary was Hinda Weber, Education Case Manager for Alta Vista High School and Advisor to its Interact Club. With her came four Interact Club members from Alta Vista. Their club had worked hard to support us at the Crab Feed for which they made 500 cup-cakes.
Sign-up sheets were circulated for :- Memorial Weekend at Squaw Creek Resort, Tahoe, where we have six rooms available free, Rotating Dinner on April 26.
Scholarships have been decided. Thanks to everyone who participated, interviewing and evaluating applicants, especially Ken Schwaderer, Jim Spangler, Judy Hannemann, and Walt Joyce. Winners will be invited too our May 7 meeting.
Rotary University, (formerly Avenues of Service) is May 16, 4pm -9pm at the Double Tree Inn in San Jose. Members, especially the new Board and Red Badgers, are urged to attend.
Anna Eshoo invites attendance at the Mountain View Post Office on Sat. April 13, 1.00pm for Dedication of the building in memory of Kenneth Ballard, killed in Action. RSVP to Eshoo@gmail.com.
President Judy noted that District 5170 Speech Contest at the District Conference in Napa finished with a win by the student sponsored by Los Altos Sunset Club.
Finemaster Bruce being absent, confessions were extracted from Scott Johnson, glad to be part of our winning Golf Tournament team, Bill Maston for not introducing Laura, teacher from Burlingame. Walt Joyce admitted to having a new Lexus, Jim Cunningham joined the Presidents Club and Ken Schwaderer paid another fine for Cal’s women’t basketball team being in the Final Four.
Stevens Creek Trail Clean-up is Saturday April 20. 9am
Rotating Dinner will be Friday April 26. Walt Joyce has a sign up sheet.
Frank Davilla will not be at the meeting for the next couple of weeks. We need a volunteer to deliver the extra food to the Workers Center after the meeting.
As a Red Badge member, Craig Goldman gave us an outline of his history. Coming from a Mid-West family, his father was in business in Chicago, his mother an elementary school teacher, he enjoyed gymnastics in High School. He left the cold of Chicago to come to Stanford as a student of Human Biology but later went to Law School and worked as an attorney in Los Angeles for five years. He got a teaching credential and a job in Burlingame. He was married and has three daughters. He has been in the MV Whisman District for 15 years, three as Chief Financial Officer before becoming Superintendant.
As Speaker for the meeting. Craig Goldman, told us the MV District started in 1854 and Whisman in 1869. Now combined, they serve about 5000 students in 7 Elementary schools and 2 Middle Schools. There are five members of the Board and Craig is its sole employee. With relentless commitment to the success of students, the District has raised standards and made great progress even with 45 % second language learners. It now compares favorably with Palo Alto even though finances per student are limited. As well as Property taxes, the District receives funds from Parcel tax, Shoreline taxes, lease revenue, several local Foundations and sponsorship from Google, Microsoft, Synopsis and Samsung.
