Meeting Summary, April 9, 2013
President Judy welcomed everyone at 12:30 p.m., at the Adobe Building. She reminded all of our Call to Action for 2012-13: “PEACE THROUGH SERVICE.” Our local focus –both District 5170 and MV Rotary - is “Mission Membership”!
Jim led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Hiro shared a thought: "Secrets to Staying Young." Tom led us in singing "Take Me Out To The Ball Game."
There were no visiting Rotarians nor Visitors to introduce.
Finemaster Bruce:
* Jim paid $25 - Heather's trip to the emergency room after a Rotary meeting.
* Craig paid $20 - Chuck competed in a race with a missing glasses lense.
* Sheila paid $25 - Walt's favorite activities of traveling, hiking, biking, and golfing.
* Walt paid $30 - Jim's story of meeting Alice picking keys up for a ski cabin.
* Roger paid $30 - Bert's favorite activities of contradance and playing music.
Announcements:
The 5170 Squaw Creek Resort Contest. Our club now has 6 free rooms for Memorial Day Weekend. Sign-up sheet going around . Rotary 5170 will have 22 rooms so there may be some fun activities – besides the fun of Tahoe, and the historic facilities for Olympics at Squaw Valley.
Stevens Creek Trail Clean-Up – Sat. morning, April 20th. Anita will be providing to us more detailed information.
Tom announced that Jerylann lost her Dad last Friday night. Services are tentatively planned for next Saturday. More information will be forwarded out when services are finalyzed.
Dennis had a pacemaker implanted. He seems to be doing fine and should be at the next Rotary Meeting.
Rotating Dinner April 26 – Walt Joyce. Walt said that two more homes are needed to host a meal.
Scholarships have been decided upon. Thanks to everyone who participated in interviewing and evaluating applicants – especially Ken, Jim, Judy and Walt. The Scholarship winners will be invited to our May 7th meeting.
Rotary University – formerly Avenues of Service - Thursday May 16 from 4 – 9pm at the Doubletree. We’d like attendance by all next year’s Board members , all co-chairs, all red badger’s, and anyone else who wants to be inspired about possibilities in our Rotary. Registration is paid by the club.

Today's Program:
Craig, speaker chairman for the month, introduced Betsy Nikolchev, Director of the Family Engagement Institute (FEI) for Foothill College. FEI works with many families, organizations, and schools throughout Santa Clara County, and part of San Mateo County, in helping children from low income families achieve their full potential. They provide free opportunities and resources to families and their children through existing organizations. Because of their partnership with Foothill College they are able to issue Certificates of Completion for the courses that parents complete. Courses include: parenting classes, family literacy, computer basics, strengthening the home-school connection, college preparation, and much more.
President July's Closing Remarks:
Our speaker next week, April 16, will be MVLA High School District Superintendent Barry Groves – on his winter-break trip with LAHS students to build a school in Haiti.
On the last Tues. of this month – April 30 we will have an afternoon social – 5 to 6:30 at Scott’s (formerly Cantankerous Fish) rather than our regular lunch meeting here.
Our “three-fer” for next meeting, April 16, will be Kevin Chiapello.
And Remember Judy’s Dream for our Rotary this year: Each member will attend every meeting possible, arriving before 12:15 each week, taking on at least one club responsibility during the year, and bringing in at least one new member this year!!
