President’s Greeting:   Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Welcome to the Rotary Club of Mountain View – the BEST club ever. I am Anita Grossman, your president for 2011-12. Our call to action for 2011-12 is to “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity”.

General Club Announcements:  

·        Jim Cochran has been scouting meeting locations for us to return to the ‘hood. We will need a few people to check out these venues – availability of parking, quality of food, storage area for our stuff and price.  Let Anita know if you are interested.·       

·        The District Conference will be held on June 1-3 at the Resort at Squaw Creek, Olympic Village, Lake Tahoe. This is the district-wide celebration of the 2011-12 year and its leadership.   

·        In a continuing effort to improve District 5170 public awareness throughout the world, the District URL of www.rotary5170.org will be changing to www.rotarydistrict5170.org.  This is more in line with other districts and announcing that 5170 represents a district. 

·        Although the $200M Challenge has been met by Rotarians, more money is needed to completely eradicate Polio. To encourage your support, District 5170 has created the "Points for Polio Program".  Effective February 1, 2012, as a means to support the clubs in reaching their goal, the District will match any gift for Polio Plus of $100 or more with an equal number of TRF points towards that member's Paul Harris achievement.

·        Membership Minute – Jerylann Mateo.  She passed out the completed new multicolor trifold club brochure to all present.  More are available.  Please use these as needed. 

Rotary Jeopardy – Bruce Barsi lightened the wallets of Hal Taylor as he goes to an Arizona Apache Indian Reservation to help build houses, Jim Spangler rejoices that Jake is home from Afghanistan and Joya is playing in Cabaret. Jim Cunningham, Phil Armi and Judy Hanneman played Fine Jeopardy.

Alex works for the non-profit Acterra which serves the Silicon Valley on solutions for sustainable landscaping.  They work together with Green@ Home for energy audits, Business and environmental Awards, Be the change, and Acterra Stewardship.

She informed us of the consequences of unsustainable landscapes use more water, require more maintenance and cost more money.

She recommends that we check our irrigations systems for leaks and time it for AM use; don’t blow leaves, they make good mulch; leave grass clippings to compost on the lawn; us natural alternatives for pesticides and herbicides so they don’t poison fish downstream or cause blooming algae.

She encourages native plants that can be purchased at many places. Google it.

Doing this will encourage lizards and birds to return and take care of pests naturally. 

Next week’s presenter is Susan Harlan from El Camino Hospital. Susan will present on “Seniors and Safety in the Home.”
