General Club Announcements:
On January 17, 2012, Rotary International announced that Rotary clubs worldwide met their $200 million fundraising challenge for polio eradication. Further, the Gates Foundation pledged an additional $50 million to the campaign to end polio.
On Saturday, January 28th, Rich Casey and Allan Varni of the Rotary Club of Los Altos will be traveling to Liberia with a group of six other healthcare professionals to train 50 Liberians in the techniques involved in preventing the transmission of HIV from infected mothers to their newborn infants. The training workshop, which will last one week and take place at St. Joseph's Catholic Hospital, is being funded primarily under grants from The Rotary Foundation and Rotary District 5170. Rich and Allan will be posting news and photos of this workshop on Twitter @LosAltosRotary and on the Child AIDS Prevention Facebook page. Please follow them on these sites next week and share these links with all your other friends who may have an interest in Child AIDS Prevention in Africa.

SPEAKER CONTEST – Judy Hannemann thanked the speech and debate teacher from
Los Altos High and Jack Kelly from the Los Altos Rotary club for making arrangements for the students to be at our meeting. We had judges, Jim Cunningham, Ken Schwaderer and Jim Spangler and Timer Tom Myers from our club to assist her. We heard from the three speakers, the judges scored and the winner was selected. They are pictured here. Third was Sonja Tavare, Second was Kyle Evans (Left) and the Winner was Arian Dehnow (right). Arian will go on to the Area Contest at the Los Altos Club in February.
Our meeting next week is a Fellowship Meeting at The Cantankerous Fish beginning at 5:30. In addition to bringing a significant other, please invite a friend or colleague who might be interested in learning more about our life-changing work.
The Board meeting will be held from 3:30 to 5:15.
Thank you again for joining us today. We are adjourned!
