Meeting Summary May 15, 2012

President Anita welcomed members and guests to our last meeting at the Palo Alto Elks Lodge. 

Monique Kane led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Thought for the Day: Sheila Hodgkinson expressed gratitude for all we have here in California.

Introduction of Visitors:  Frank Davila introduced Kelly Trevethan, from United Capital of San Francisco.

Rotary International Conference:  President-Elect, Judy Hannemann, was back from the International Convention in Bangkok. She described some of the challenges and rewards of travel with other Rotarians.

She urged every club member to take some individual action to help the Club and especially to find new speakers for our meetings.

Special Announcements:

Our next meeting on May 22 will be in Mountain View at the Historic Adobe Building at 150 Moffet Boulevard. Scholarship recipients will be attending along with parents and teachers.

For future meetings at the Adobe Building members will be expected to attend or to give notice for their absence so that the caterer can be informed about the number of meals to be served.

Heather and Fredrik Stenshamn announced the birth of their second son, Daniel, on Tuesday May 8^th.   

Monique Kane will be honored as California Senator Joe Simitian’s pick for Woman of the Year at a special reception next Tuesday evening, May 22, 4:30PM – 6:00PM at the Los Altos History Museum. Members are invited to attend.

General Club Announcements:

*           Judy Hannemann is looking to have a party of members to attend the San Jose Giants’ game on July 21.

*           Foundation Minute – Gerry Felix spoke about R.I Foundation’s support for Ambassadorial Scholars.

                                     Our Club members have given 100% support to the Foundation this year.

*           Club Service-   Walt Joyce reminded members to sign up for the Golf Tournament and BBQ on June 8.

*           Kickout Party-  Sunday June 24 at 6 pm at Michaels at Shoreline. Tom will have sign-ups next week.

Speaker – Thomas Dittler introduced Martin Fugmann, Head of  German International School of Silicon Valley. There are 140 German Schools worldwide, funded by the German Government . The School in Mountain View is one of three in the Bay Area; others are in San Francisco and Berkeley.  Schools are bilingual with academic programs serving a diverse student population. Mountain View has 14 graduates this year. Final examinations are 50-50 in English and German.  Inspections every four years help to ensure high quality education for all students. The Rotary Interact Club in the Mountain View School has about 15 members.
