Gerry Felix passed out Double Sustainer pins to those members not present when District Governor Arley Marley visited our club.  We are at the $6,700 level with about 75% of the members making a contribution.  

 

Finemaster – Bruce Barsi. Bruce began using the questionnaires he passed out in July.  Some interesting information about our members was revealed.  (You just had to be there)

 

RotaCare Commitment – Jim Spangler.  Jim asked for members to select either a direct financial commitment of $115 or agree to sell football raffle tickets.

 

Club Announcements:

 

●        Lovely thank you note and photo from our speaker Joy Palmer-Cooper; thank you Ernie for making this possible and thank you Ken for being our three-fer last week and providing a great overview of Joy’s remark’s and her long-history with our Club.

 

●        Due to a $54 increase per week in renting the Adobe House, we are actively exploring other options for our weekly meetings to begin in January 2012. With a better percentage of member attendance our weekly expenses would be less.

 

●        The Holiday Party is on Sunday, December 11 at Cuccina Venti on Shoreline. The event will begin at 6:00 for cocktails and 7:00 for dinner. The cost will be $45 and is a mandatory event.  The wonderful Madrigals from Mountain View High School are confirmed.

 

●        The District’s Avenues of Service is on October 20 at the DoubleTree in San Jose; please register as soon as possible either at the District Website or on the clipboard.  The nuts and bolts of the Youth Protection Certification Process will also be featured, and there will be Live Scan available on-site.  The event will also include a Project Faire and an opportunity to purchase Rotary wear and other products.  Dinner and a speaker will be included.  The club pays for registration.

 

·        The Los Altos Sunrise Club is conducting a blood drive on Saturday, October 22, from 10:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Stanford Blood Center.

 

·        Asante will be held on Novemeber 2 at the same place as in the past.  Cost will be $50.

 

 

·        The Crab Feed will be held January 28, 2012.  Save the date and get ready to sell tickets.

 

·        Allan is planning a surprise birthday party for our exchange student at the lunch meeting on October 18.  It will be one day before Rafa’s actual birthday but we will celebrate it then.

 

 

·        Out next social meeting will be Tuesday evening October 25th at the Cantankerous Fish, on Castro.  $10 for a drink and hors ‘d ovurs.

 

●        Upcoming speakers for the month include next week’s speaker Susan Hamilton who will talk about Yard and Garden Renovation and Design and a representative from the Santa Clara Water District on October 18. We will resume our late afternoon Fellowship Meeting on October 25; location TBD.

Jim Cunningham introduced our speaker, a member of the Los Altos Rotary Club, retired attorney and current spokesperson for the Los Altos Aids Project.  The Project is one which our club, along with many others, has supported with our District Designated Funds for International Projects.  She had a Power Point presentation and short video reviewing the project.  As a recap:  The project was begun in 1989 by Dude Angus, then president of the Los Altos Rotary club, when his son contracted the Aids virus via a blood transfusion.  It was during this time that much misinformation or no information was known about the disease.  In the ensuing 20 years, the project has transformed into helping out at ground zero, Liberia. Africa.  Thirty three million people there have the disease, 2 million of whom are children.  The children of women who have Aids have a 33% chance of contracting the disease at birth.  Of those children, 75% will be dead in 3 years, 95% will be dead in 5 years.  For only $20 these children can be given drugs to save 95% of the children.  Los Altos has teamed up with the Sinkor Rotary club to help with the project in Liberia.  They have received a $75,000 grant from the Rotary Foundation to begin this project and will submit an application for another $250,000 to help with drugs and distribution.  Many other Rotary clubs as well as international organizations have signed on to help and sponsor this project.
