President Anita Welcomed us to the Rotary Club of Mountain View – the BEST club ever

Introduction of Visitors: The Club welcomed four visitors to the meeting today:
John McAlister from the Los Altos Rotary Club
Tim Young, an outbound Rotary Exchange Student to Germany
Rafael Casado, inbound Rotary Exchange Student from Spain
Kathleen Smith, Alan Goodman’s wife.
Club Announcements:
● Peter Early just moved to Walla Walla, Washington. commute is He is bidding us adieu and will be looking for a Club in his area.
● Kim Castro wrote a lovely thank you note for the Target gift certificate for her new wee one.
● Avenues of Service is Thursday, October 20 at the DoubleTree in San Jose, from 4:00 to 7:30-ish. Dinner is included and the Club picks up the tab. We have 6 attending so far.
● Reminder that the Holiday Party is on Sunday, December 11 at Cuccina Venti on Shoreline. The event will begin at 6:00 for cocktails and 7:00 for dinner.
● Other upcoming events are Asante on November 2nd at the Del Monte Bldg. (See Carla for tickets - $50)
● Mark your calendars now for our Crab Feed on January 28, 2012.
● We are resuming our Fellowship Meeting next week at The Cantankerous Fish in downtown Mountain View. We’ll begin at 5:00. The Board will meet an hour before the Club meeting.
Rotary Foundation Minute: “Every Rotarian Every Year” Gerry Felix reported that she has sent checks totaling $5,850 to The Rotary Foundation, which represent 82.14% of our
$6,000 goal for our 2011-2012. There are six remaining members who will be contacted to help us reach 100% Participation.
Membership Minute: Jerylann Mateo is asking all members to complete the membership referral form and refer a new member prospect. Her committee is working diligently to help us achieve our Club’s membership goal of a net 6 new members by June 30, 2012.
Rotary Jeopardy – Bruce Barsi, our notorious Finemaster, has captured our attention with his Jeopardy Board. Who knew that Bill Maston has played golf with Willie Mays and Willie McCovey? Who knew that Hiro’s goal is to play his age in golf? Who knew that Dennis Kobza started the Mountain View President’s Club? What an enjoyable way to raise money for the Club and learn something new about our members.
RotaCare Commitment – Jim Spangler has polled most of the Club membership and at this time, 90% of the members would like to donate to the RotoCare renovation by donating a proportionate share to our commitment. Jim has stated that the donation amount per member will be about $115.00.
Let’s Get the Party Started – Alan Goodman introduced Rafael Casado, our Rotary Exchange Student from Spain. Rafael has a sister in Spain who is 14 years old and his parents are practicing physicians. Rafael’s father is an Emergency Room Physician and his mother is a Family Practice Physician. Rafael’s birthday is October 19th and his new Rotary Family, the Mountain View Rotary Club, helped him celebrate his 17th birthday with a birthday cake and a “Happy Birthday” song. The Club wishes him the very best in his yearlong stay in California.

SPEAKER PRESENTATION: Jim Cunningham introduced Liang Lee, Deputy of the Santa Clara Water District. The District was established in 1929 and currently serves 2,000,000 people who average 120 billion gallons of annual water consumption. It wholesales water to 15 cities, 13 retailers and direct well owners throughout Santa Clara County. During his 30-minute talk, he very clearly outlined the Mission of the Water District as defined within three main parts: 1) provide clean reliable water, 2) provide natural flood protection, and 3) provide healthy creeks and ecosystems.
