President Anita welcomed us  to the Rotary Club of Mountain View – the BEST club ever

 

Pledge of Allegiance: was led by Fred Storek

 

Thought for the Day:  Hal Taylor shared a reminder to give family, friends, and Rotarians compliments on good deeds.

 

Introduction of Visitors:  Tomas Dittler, a Rotarian from Munich, Germany who is currently living in the area visited for the second time.

 

Club Announcements:

-          Perfect Attendance for August was announced:  Jim Cunningham, Frank Davila,  Alan Goodman, Jerylann Mateo, Chuck Osborn, Jim Spangler., and Fred Storek.

-          Other news of fellow members:   Let’s toast Judy Hannemann, Geri Felix and Bert Raphael who are enjoying some well-deserved vacations. 

Rotary Events & Activities:  dates to put on your calendars:

-          September 10-11: CHAC Fundraiser at the Mtn. View Art and Wine Festival needs parking lot volunteers, contact Monique Kane, she is still in need of some volunteers.

 

-          September 16: CSA's Annual Hometown Hero's Event honoring fellow Rotarian Judy Hannemann. You can still sign up to join the 12 others who are attending the breakfast.  Please make the check payable to CSA and pay the $50 to Chuck.

 

-          Meeting on September 27:  The meeting will be held at lunch at Adobe Building as we have a special guest, Professor Joy Palmer-Cooper as our speaker. Joy was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar hosted by Rotary District 5170 in 1982-83. Joy was hosted by our club during her scholarship year at Stanford University. See additional details below and invite fellow Rotarians to hear about Joy's on-going commitment to Rotary's humanitarian mission.

 

-          October 20: the 2011 Avenues of Service event, held at the Doubletree Hotel in San Jose.  

 

-          November 2: Asante's fundraiser to be held at the Del Monte Building in Sunnyvale. Carla Paul is on the planning committee and hopes all can attend and seeks auction donations.

Other Announcements:

-          We will forgo the evening Fellowship Meeting for the month of September, and continue this pilot on Tuesday, October 25. We are also looking at holding this meeting at another venue, such as another restaurant in downtown Mountain View. More details on this to follow!

 

-          Anita will be talking with City of Mountain View to discuss a significant increase in the use of Adobe House.  

-          The Cal and Stanford group all got along very well at the same table to celebrate the kick-off of the season.

 

 

Speaker: 

Ginny Lear, Assistant District Governor for Area 9 introduced our District Governor Arley Marley. Ginny is our – as in Area 9 -- liaison to the District. Ginny leads a monthly meeting of the Area 9 presidents to share information and answer any questions we have. Anita shared that there are many aspects to being club president that she really likes, and this monthly meeting is one of them.

Arley 'pinned' contributors/pledges whom are double or super sustainer.  The list was most honorable, therefore, too long to list here.

Arley shared his thoughts and passions about Rotary and why he has contributed over the years. He reminded us of all the projects and initiatives that Rotary International and local clubs are part of.  Plus he shared a few new initiatives: Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley - a club to be created which members will attend 'cloud'/web meetings and individuals to partner with a local club to take part in local service projects; YMCA/Rotary collaboration; Yellow pages on the district website where all can share their business details; a 'best practices' document on the district website so all clubs may collaborate and learn from one another; expansion of ELC (Enterprise Leadership Conference); and several more.  In summary, Keep Rotary in Your Life!

Professor Joy Palmer-Cooper, JP - Guest speaker on September 27th

 

Joy was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, hosted by Rotary District 5170 in 1982-1983. Thus it is the 30th anniversary year of her being awarded this honour by UK District 1060 in 1981.

 

Joy was hosted by the Mountain View Rotary Club during her Scholarship year at Stanford University. Rotarian Past President Irval Carter served as her counselor and Rotarian Past President Ernest Hawks held the position of Chairman of the Foundation Student Counselor Committee.

 

30 years on from this award, Joy returns to mark the anniversary and tell us of her on-going commitment to the humanitarian mission of Rotary.
