Introduction of Visitors: Anita Grossman introduced Barry Cook who introduced Christopher Cook, his son. Christopher is a Civil Engineer for the city of Mountain View.
Club Announcements:
Monique Kane explained that CHAC received $7,800 from the parking program during the Art and Wine Festival in Mountain View this past weekend. She thanked all Rotarians that helped.
Tom Myers said that we had 12 members signed up for the Rotary table at the Hometown Heroes Breakfast on Friday, September 16. One of the honorees is our Judy Hannemann. It is being held at the Crown-Plaza Hotel.
Carla Paul announced that Asante’ will again be held to raise funds for our RotaCare Clinic in Mountain View. It will be held on November 2, 5:30 to 8 PM at the Del Monte Room, Sunnyvale. $50 tickets.
The RotaCare staff has invited all Mountain View Rotarians to join in the Volunteer Thank You event on October 6. It is the 15th RotaCare Anniversary and will be held from 6 to 9 PM in the Garden House, Shoup Park, Los Altos. If you would like to go, either call or send an email to:

We are adjusting our Fellowship Meeting for the month of September so that we can welcome and honor Professor Joy Palmer-Cooper, a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar hosted by our District in 1982 and hosted by our club during her scholarship year at Stanford. Joy returns to the Bay Area to mark this anniversary and tell us of her ongoing commitment to the humanitarian mission of Rotary. This regular luncheon meeting would be an ideal time to invite prospective members and/or members from other clubs. Joy will speak on September 27.
That means that we will not have our Fellowship-only evening meeting on the last Tuesday of the month which is on September 27th. Instead, we will reinstate this pilot program on October 25 and probably be at a new location. !
Anita spoke with Steve Achabal from the City of Mountain View to discuss increased rates for the Adobe house. We are now paying $98.00 per meeting, as opposed to $55 under the old rates. The increase is due to the mandatory addition of janitorial service. We are also under contract to our caterer for a minimum of 30 lunches, which is very reasonable. With attendance at meetings hovering at around 24-25, even with the terrific speaker line-up that Judy has put together, we are running a deficit every week. The Board will be looking closely at this matter, and we welcome your input. This is fairly urgent and we will need to address this as soon as possible. Please email or call Anita or any Board member with suggestions or feedback as soon as possible.
The annual Avenues of Service program will be held on October 20 at the DoubleTree in San Jose. The program looks really interesting, including sessions on Rotary Foundation Scholars, FaceBook and Social Media, as well as videoconfering through Skype. Also included is a session on the Youth Protection Certification Process and Best Preactices for Membership and user ClubRunner.

Our speaker was the new Mountain View City Manager, Dan Rich.
Dan was introduced by Judy Hannemann and immediatly explained that he had a “no join” policy for Rotary and other service clubs. He said he would attend when invited, but declined to join.
Dan has been working for the city for a few months, but tonight is his first Council Meeting. In the meantime he has been getting acquainted with the city and has talked with at least 40 of our residents that have been active in the community.
Dan came to us from Campbell, CA, and lives in Palo Alto with his family. After his last day in Campbell he came to downtown Mountain View on a Friday night. He was very pleased to see the active street scene and the large variety of people that were enjoying the restaurants as he was.
He answered questions and promised to come back with a city report when we asked him.
