Summary of Meeting, Jan 17, 2012

All joined Bert Raphael in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Tom Myers reminded everyone that, despite the acrimony that pervades our political process, the most important thing to remember when contemplating our country and our form of government are the wise words that end the pledge of allegiance we just recited: “…with liberty and justice for all.”
Dr. Phil was absent from the meeting, so Alan Goodman stepped in and improvised. Since the 49ers are good (and I mean REALLY good) for the first time in years, we sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” Since there are no football-specific songs that anyone could think of, Alan figured that it would work. Everything started off quite well and all sang robustly…..until the last line of the song, when everyone realized that there really is no way you can turn “one, two, three strikes you’re out” into anything remotely football related. So, we all just stopped singing.
President-Elect Judy introduced our visitors. They included Assistant District Governor for Area 9, Ginny Lear, from the Palo Alto Club; Erika Cagampan, Interact Director for Area 13, which includes the high schools supported by our club; and Marty Spangler, Jim Spangler’s father, previously from Los Altos Rotary.
Assistant District Governor Ginny made a very special presentation to Chuck Osborn and his wife Jan. Chuck and Jan have designated the Rotary Foundation as a bequest in their estate planning, making them members of the “Bequest Society.” This very important group of people is making sure that the important work of Rotary to end polio, work for world peace and foster international understanding will continue long after they have gone. On behalf of everyone in Mountain View Rotary, thank you Chuck and Jan.
Erika Cagampan gave us an update on Interact activities, asking us to give them support in the terrific work they do.

Jerylann Mateo and Jim Spangler gave quick updates of Membership and Community Service respectively.
Judy Hannemann told us about the speech contest next week. Please attend and call Judy if you want to help out.
CRAB FEED IS JANUARY 28!!! Alan Goodman provided us with a Crab Feed update.
Hal Taylor was our guest speaker today. He told us about local volunteer opportunities, then talked about his volunteer experiences around the world. He inspired, motivated and challenged us to volunteer our efforts to make life a little better for others.
We will meet again next week at the Palo Alto Elks Club. This will be our Annual Speech Contest. Judy Hannemann promises 4 great high school speakers.
