Rotary Moment: POLIO SPREADS
In looking at the latest data on Polio cases by country, the good news is the number of cases is down from 64 last year to 41 this year comparing similar months. The bad news is that 4 cases have occurred in Somalia and 2 cases in Kenya. The message is that until polio is eradicated, it can and will spread to other countries. To date in 2013, Nigeria has 24 cases, Pakistan 9, and Afghanistan 2.
Kevin Chipello was given his Blue Badge. He is the last of the current crop of Red Badgers to receive it. He received a standing ovation from all.
Announcements:
Golf, Barbecue and Poker – last Friday, June 7 – Bill Maston, Bert Raphael, and Alan Goodman, all losers in the Holdem Poker Tournament. Scott Johnson said he had the most fun playing a new Game – Mexican Train (with all women).
Kick-Out – Sunday June 30th - Note: the time is 5:30 to 9:00 pm . A sign up sheet was passed around. All are encouraged to attend because of you this year was a success.
Remember - We will be dark the Tuesday after the Kick-Out - July 2, which almost coincides with the 4th of July Holiday. The location of our meeting on the 25th will be determined later. The Adobe Building has been rented to another group.
June Board Meeting – which will be this year’s Board’s Last Harrah! and next year’s Board’s Let’s Get Started! – will be at Judy’s house on June 20 at 4:30.
District Governor Joe Hamilton’s Kick Out – Roast and Toast will be Thurs., July 18 at Saratoga Springs. This is usually a fun event – especially if a group of us go.
Jim Cunningham- Gave an update on Dennis Kobza. He is recovering and will be here next week.
Alan – Monthly Speaker Chairs. August still open. Scott’s 2nd month is February. A sign up list was passed around.
San Jose Giants – Will be scheduled for August 10th. Cost will be $25 and include a BBQ meal and game tickets. A sign up will be passed around soon.
Reminder about RSVP’ing to meetings – if you’re not coming or if you are bringing an extra person. It is very important for you to indicate that you are not coming to a Tuesday meeting…..on Club Runner or by eMailing Chuck by Monday Noon if at all possible.
The Endowment Board of Trustees nominees are: Jim Cunningham, Jim Spangler, Steve Nichols and Monique Kane. Elections for this important Board for us will be held next week. They are responsible for allocating the Net Proceeds from the Crab Feed and selecting our Scholarship Recipients.

Program :
Today we are pleased to have as our program Cindy Wilber telling us about Proyecto Itzaes & Rotary.. She talked to us about educating Mayan people in health. What they should eat and drink and what they shouldn’t. The young people, under 15 are the best reciepients of the education. People 15 – 45 are the most resistant. Both Los Altos and Palo Alto Rotary clubs have been instrumental in helping fund the educational programs and in actually helping build the needed facilities.

NEXT WEEK–June 18, rather than Tomi Ryba, the Chief Executive of El Camino Hospital, the speaker will be John Zoglin (son of former MV Rotarian and & Judy’s sponsor! Mary Lou Zoglin) the president of their Board of Trustees. Please plan to not only be here but bring someone with you! Please make a special effort!!
Our “three-fer” for June 18, will be Bill Maston.
On June 25 – two weeks from today – our program will be our own President-Elect Bruce Barsi and his Board giving us a preview of next year. If you have any suggestions or comments, this is the time to speak out!
And Remember Judy’s Dream for our Rotary this year: Each member will attend every meeting possible, arriving before 12:15 each week, taking on at least one club responsibility during the year, and bringing in at least one new member this year!! Don’t forget to wear your Rotary Pin!
